College Softball News – Guilford’s Lackey Named ODAC Pitcher of the Week

FOREST, Va. – Guilford College sophomore Courtney Lackey (North Wilkesboro, N.C./West Wilkes) won the Old Dominion Athletic Conference’s (ODAC) Softball Pitcher of the Week Award Monday. She is a first-time recipient of the league’s weekly honor and the Quakers’ first pitcher so honored this year. Guilford’s Sabrina Moreno earned the league’s hitter of the week prize February 22.

Lackey picked up two victories in as many appearances in Guilford’s 3-1 week. She threw 11.2 scoreless innings and recorded 10 strikeouts with three walks. Lackey worked six shutout frames in Guilford’s 8-0, six-inning victory over Mary Baldwin College March 2 for her third win of the season. She entered in relief three days later at Averett University and scattered eight hits over 5.2 scoreless innings with five strikeouts. Her RBI single with two out in the seventh inning broke a 4-4 tie and sent the Quakers to a 5-4 win.

Lackey (4-0) leads Guilford and ranks second in the ODAC with four wins this season. Her 0.98 earned run average also stands second in the league and her 18 strikeouts are fourth. She has two complete games and tops the ODAC with two shutouts. She has two hits in five early season at bats for a .400 batting average.

Coach Dennis Shores’ Quakers (8-2) visit Salem College Wednesday (3/9) for a nonleague doubleheader before returning home to host Southern Virginia College Saturday (3/12) and Wilson College Sunday (3/13).
