  1. K. Baker at Welborn is in the 7th grade. Is there another one on the team. Is this 7th and 8th grade allstars this year or still 8th graders?

  2. I would have thought Cody from southeast would have made the team as well as Jalen Cone from HPCA who is a 8th grader that played on varsity.

  3. Southeast boys getting one player is laughable. Aycock gets four. Really?

    How are these teams picked?

  4. Shoot Alan an E-mail, he has coaches and other basketball people checking out the players and like anything else out there these days, it is a work in progress…

So schools and coaches don’t respond to the initial contact from the Games committee and we all know if they don’t react, there is no attack..

  5. Middle school coaches were asked to vote. You cannot vote for your own players. “Opposing coaches were asked what players had in impact on the game”- basically, who were your best opposing players. so it was voted on.

  6. Yes sir there was a ballot that was sent out…Must respond and let them know….

  7. Here are last year’s rosters and you might recognize a few names from last year’s games….

  8. I am a little confused at how these players were picked? I saw something about a vote, and I personally know middle school basketball coaches who did not get ballots. There are 4 players from one school on one team which raises red flag…and you have one or two players from conference championship team. I also noticed that none of the players who exceled on BOTH ends of the court are on this list. I can name numerous players from Southeast Middle that should have been on both lists over who was listed…red flags everywhere! Think it’s who you know…

  9. This is unquestionably who you know. Kernodle beat SW 2 out of 3 games including the championship game yet Kernodle has 1 player and SW has 4. That is a joke. I agree with 2 from SW don’t tell me those other players had any impact on those games. Kernodle should have had 2 or 3 players on this team. Southeast has at least 2 other players much better than several of the SW or Aycock players. NW should have had 2 players and Northern should have had 1 player. Jamestown should only have 1 player on this list compared to other teams across the county. This list is a joke and you can clearly so how these players were picked based on their connections and relationships with the tournament. Maybe some coaches did not response but I really question who tallied the votes.

  10. You can’t tell me that Kiser only deserved 1 player. The other Kiser player may be better than the one selected. By the way, Kiser also beat SW head to head in their only match up of the year. Kiser 1 player and SW 4. Apparently the SW players only played well against lesser competition and could not beat teams like Kiser or Kernodle as stated by another observer.

  11. Everyone has their opinions and the most important thing is that there is a game and we get a lot of the same responses each year and you will never be able to make everybody happy and keep everybody happy…

If you your son or daughter didn’t make the teams this it could be a good thing…

Use this as a chip on your shoulder as you enter high school and let this be a challenge to make you work harder…

If more kids and families would do that we would be better off…The parents have to set the tone for kids…

If they really want to take it to the next level in high school, get them working harder and do it today…

Look at that list from last year’s games and you will only see about 4-5 players that made it to their varsity teams after 8th grade and upon hitting the ninth grade…

Names that come to mind quickly are Cayla King, Elizabeth Kitley, Faith Price and Tristen Perry…There may have been a few more…(Kobe and Keyshaun and often times I forget that they were only freshmen this year for SWG. Seems like they have been around for a long time already and I remember back when Keyford was playing for UNCG in the late 80’s.)

Take these All Star games in stride and realize they are just one next step in the road…

Make it a point and make it a goal if you did not make this game to surpass everyone that made it instead of you and hope I the parents will challenge their children to work hard toward the next level, because there will be bumps in the road…

The All Star Games are lot of fun, they are not the be-all, end-all…

This is a very good event and a lot of work goes into this event, but do remember, “This is not the last Event”….

The next real big event comeS November 1, 2016 and if you are not ready then, then you are going to really be out of luck…Time to train, time to start getting ready for the 2016-2017 season today and the AAU games will not be enough….You have to work on the fine points of your game/games…

Last man or woman to leave to leave the court will be the first person in line to get the Trophy at Next Year’s high school basketball banquet….

You may say that, “I’m just a kid and why should I have to work so hard?”, well the question for you then is, “How far do you really want to go?”…….

  12. There is no need for all this non sense . these are the teams . they are good in my opinion . Jermani Kea , Paris Kea’s little brother is great .Because of him he got his team to win the conference tournament. its not only him who is good . Lamont Mcneill Jr. he is also a great player . Silas too , these are a must to make the all star team. All of these players are talented . if you aren’t happy then your just gonna have to deal with it .

  13. Well a lot of coaches didn’t vote and a lot of teams didn’t have rosters up either from what I hear. It is what it is in glad they do have all star games for the kids think it’s pretty cool could it be better yes just like most other things. I went to the one in Winston Salem last week at CP3 gym it was nice! 3 point contest dunk contest 7th grade game 8th grade game fun environment and I believe they had people going to games looking at kids. Guilford County does have the girls game which Winston Salem doesn’t have. For the even to get better here why not list some suggestions that you all have that can make it better. Last year 8th graders it’s a good number that played varsity this year Nick Cheely Justin Matthews and the Langley boys who both started and almost made it to state championship.

  14. I think the east boys going to run away with this one! Kea and Hayes backcourt then Mason and Williams in front court and just add a 5th starter think they win by 15.

  15. I am a middle school coach who sent in a list of 8th players that did not get on the list to be voted on. I did not get an email to vote on the female players even though I am a girls coach. Not sure what happened but please do not let everyone believe that we all get a chance to vote or that our players are listed to be voted on. It is also surprising that 4 players from one team would get on an all star team especially when that team was 3rd or 4th in the conference and the conference and tournament champions get less. Amazing that 1 school has 8 players between the boys and girls teams. Must be an amazing connection between that school and those in charge of the game. I am all for a fair selection process but this seems a little off.

  16. To Middle school coach… Every school was on the ballot from guilford County so you must’ve waited until after the deadline to vote or something. The organizers are honest & have integrity. Everybody knows that. If you didn’t vote, be on top of it next year. They take the highest vote getters. You all talk directly to them instead of trying to bash their efforts.

  17. To “Coach” No one is questioning whether the organizers are honest & have integrity. I can say without question that our staff never received an email or knew about the voting process. Obviously I did not vote for any of these players because I was not provided any information. By definition I am sure this was the case with a few other coaches. I know for a fact that another coach in my conference did not receive any information about voting either. This process may be what it is but I just want to make sure that the readers of this site understand that I know there were several key players not on this list that absolutely should have been. The game is called an All Star game which suggest a system of fairness and representing quality players across a league. It may be fair but it was not clean or clear to all coaches. Something was lost in the process from those running this event. I just think as a coach that it should be fair to all players and not just a select few that were notified.

  18. People please. What does it matter? You complain about every thing that is posted. The problem today with PARENTS is that you live for the blogs and if your kid is name does not appear it’s a problem.

  19. To let’s be honest, ok, let’s say you didn’t get it. I know that every school was accounted for on the ballot, and you can’t vote for your own players anyway. This is the 4th year that they’ve had this event and the voting process hasn’t changed. They contact EVERY school. Not sure if your AD overlooked it or what, but you can contact the organizers as Andy said with any questions or concerns. Stop acting like your school wasn’t accounted for because again EVERY middle school was on the ballot including am area to write in anyone that you wanted in the “other” box.

  20. I keep telling myself this game is just for fun. I do know in the past the teams have been pretty lopsided. I don’t have an issue with who’s on the teams just how they are divided.

  21. Let’s hope we can hear from a few people that are happy that some of these kids on the list were selected..

For some of the coaches who feel like they got left out, I would suggest that you go to the event, meet the people that are the event organizers and get them to know for future purposes, as they apply to future events/games…

Make it point to get to know the people that run the event and work to get your points across…

If you are a parent this has to be about your child..If it is about the parent then that is just wrong…It has to be about the kid…For the parents, your day has come and gone…This if for the kids…

We will keep the polls open until around midnight and then close them down…

  22. I am so proud of my son. He works super hard on and off the court. I’m excited to see him do what he loves the most..& that’s playing ball. My son is close friends with kids from different schools and it’s all love. They shake hands at the end of every game win or lose. That’s how we are raising him. We want him to be humble no matter what. If his name wasn’t listed, we would still go and support his friends, continue with his individualized trainings, and AAU team to ensure that he is perfecting his craft. I’m happy for all of the kids who are listed and the ones that didn’t make it as well. Looking forward to Saturday! Let’s go East!

  23. No doubting what Mrs. Thomas said right there…In the girls high school playoff game at UNCG on Saturday, there was a big hug exchanged between NWG’s Hayley Barber and SWG’s Lashonda Monk…Much respect among the two competitors and I think Lashonda was in this Middle School All-Star game a few years back…Hayley too maybe, not sure…(It was a classic embrace at the end of the contest on Saturday.)

It is all about respect and support between teammates and opponents…Mrs. Thomas made a strong positive statement and has some very points…

  24. To the greater Guilford County community. For the past 4 years, a dedicated group of individuals along with myself, have decided to put on an all-star game to help celebrate scholar athletes in our community. The process for selection is primarily based on information provided by the middle schools in Guilford County, both public and private. With that said please allow me the opportunity to also state that it is not in the job description of any school official to respond to our request for information. Furthermore, the athletic directors and coaches reserve the right to participate or reframe from responding to request from the committee. I am however eternally grateful for the schools who were able to provide information about their scholar athletes that will allow us to put on such an event. The voting guidelines shared with coaches is simple. Scholar-athletes can only receive votes from opposing coaches. This methodology was adopted with the thought of releaving the coaches of any biases. The task of selecting 40 scholar athletes from a county the size of Guilford with more than 400 kids playing middle school basketball is a daunting task to say the least. It is never the intent of this event to harm or diminish anyones efforts with this process. We simply count the votes and the scholar athletes with the most votes regardless the position the play will be selected. I’m sure there are better ways to navigate this process, however, currently this is the process. We will welcome feedback concerning the event and the process to make it an even more meaningful event for scholar atletes and their families.

  25. I know for a fact that some coaches never received a form to submit their nominations or an email or anything. Some coaches were not even a part of the process to even vote for the finalists. While they may coach in the school system they don’t work for the school system. In the future I would suggest that you send a direct email to the coaches to insure that they get all the info. What may seem important to us may not be so important to school officials in the wide scheme of things. At any rate congratulations to all the kids and coaches in this county for a great season. Naybe next year the top 2 teams from each conference tourney can compete for a county wide championship. Now that would be exciting!!!

  26. Here is a simple solution to Alan Hooker. I am guessing this is the only local sports site that gives you the platform to promote and showcase this event. Why not use this site to ensure better communication and the awareness of information. Some coaches are not Guilford Co employees and some don’t even know about the event according to some of the messages above. You could use this site to say something such as “We are currently taken all county coaches suggestions for our all star team. The player list must be submitted by abc date. Please ensure all coaches have submitted their list.” I am sure most if not all the county coaches would at least read or have someone mention this information thus ensuring a better process.

  27. It is clear that the process needs an immediate upgrade. Why not ask any Middle School Coaches on this site that honestly did not receive a ballot, email or any communication about the game to submit their list directly to Alan Hooker by Wednesday afternoon. If nothing changes, then at least you were fair in considering the gap in communication within the committees process. If names are added, then just make space available. Both of the girls teams already have 11 players so what is wrong with adding 1 player per squad if needed. The boys only have 9 and 10 players between the 2 teams. What is wrong with adding a couple of players and making the teams even at 11 or 12 players. This would eliminate the drama, doubt about the process and help heal salty feelings. We all mistakes but the real heroes fix problems and live with fair solutions.

  28. We are going to close the comments process for late tonight/early morning and open things up again in the morning..

There is a new press release coming out tomorrow/Tuesday with the coaches being named and there should be some excitement about that…

    Maybe more news coming too…

    AD

  29. I’m proud of the opportunity for my daughter as female sports go unnoticed. She is truly the meaning of a student athlete & appreciates being noticed for her hard work on the court. Thank you for considering offering such an opportunity Mr. Hooker! The process gets better with time but keep providing the opportunity!

  30. It’s funny how yall sit and talk about other people’s children , and how everything is political just because your child didn’t get in. It’s hard to select a group of people that really deserve to be in this due to the amount of players. Now look at it this way, yall would be mad if everybody got put on the team because parents have cried then your child doesn’t get playing time, the complaining never stops. So come out and support rather than sit home, hate, and be bitter. Because your child didn’t get selected , that does not determine the level that your child is on and how good they are. So let it go, so many petty people out here and PS some of yall complaining parents need to get with your AD and coaches to see if they communicated this game effectively enough

  31. I don’t know his name but the shooting guard from Northern probably deserved to be on one of these squads. I was a former college assistant and I noticed that he has a textbook jumper for such a young age and his ability to take the ball to the basket supplemented his game nicely. Congrats to all that did get invited though and I hope to get out and show my support on Saturday. Great event idea.

  32. For those not satisfied with the rosters set by High Point’s Alan Hooker and Associates, I’m go to suggest two possible courses of action. First, if you feel a certain player or school is not represented as they should be; contact the AD at the affected school. Ask them what they did upon receipt of the email concerning this event. Some of them did some research and decided an appropriate course of action based upon their personal research. Ask GCS for copies of these emails, and any responses, forwarding, outright deletion, etc. as a public records request.

Or, just set up your own All-Star Game. First, get a local sports figure to endorse the game and add a sense of legitimacy. Next, review the stats from all of this year’s Middle School games. Talk to Coaches, officials and fans, even use your own observations to pick a team. Or; put all the player’s names on a wall, blindfold yourself, throw some darts and pick a team that way. It really doesn’t matter, your game’s not going to be sanctioned by anybody; neither is this one.

Next, secure a venue and officiating crew. If you can get these services donated, this will really benefit you in the next step.

Lastly, and most importantly, charge an admission fee to your game. If you had the foresight to set yourself up as a 501c3, smart move. If not; remember to report the profits as taxable income.

  33. I think the issue is some people feel like kids should have made it over some which it happens in most all star games people get in over other players who may be better and better #s.It is what is but maybe next year at the start of season or before the season they can get roster names and #s for all 8th graders.Maybe get a committee together of voters and they go out to games takes notes etc. Also people can come on here report back game scores who stood out etc. Someone mentioned kid from Northern he was pretty and and I saw him play one time against my sons team. I didn’t know his name and only saw him play once if its same kid believe was #5 but Northern roster wasn’t up to vote so if you don’t know a kid by name and roster not up it will be hard for kid to get voted in. Eastern Guilford roster wasn’t up but Silas Mason made because people and other coaches knew him by name. I only know of a few 7th graders playing middle school ball but you can always get a head start on next years All Star game by dropping names off here and schools the kids attend and who to look out for next year. That’s just my suggestion also this is for the kids and should be good times on Saturday. Also think the East Boys win and the girls i’m not sure but I am ready to see the matchup

    East Girls
    Reagan Kargo —Mendenhall SHOOTER!
    Sequia Johnson —Southeast Very competitive!

    WEST GIRLS
Thalia Carther — Northwest Quick and can GO!
Olivia Stubbs —Penn Griffin All around think lead her team in every Stat

  34. Talk to your coaches and your Middle School AD’s…

Tell them they need to make a future effort to have direct representation from your school…

Tell them they need to get on the stick and who knows, they may be already and if so, good job and let your voice be known and if even if they are already involved in the selection process, a little nudge can go a long way into getting things done…

Every year we get more public response and everyone needs to get out to that game on Saturday night and support the kids and meet those who are putting on the games…

You may get to meet Clarence Waddell, the assistant coach for the Smith Men’s Basketball team…

  35. I am so happy that my son was chosen to participate. He works so hard on and off the court. True Student/Athlete – A Honor Roll….. Can’t tell you enough how proud I am of him.

Can someone please post the logistics…….
Will the players have a practice session?
When and where do they meet?
How much is admission at the door?
    Who are the coaches?

  36. The coaches will be former players from the Middle School All-Star Games and will be finalized hopefully by this afternoon…I have a few names, but will wait for the Press Release…Coaches for both the boys and girls’ teams will be former players from the games…

They are trying to make this a learning and teaching session for all involved…

Practices will be held and should be set for some time on Thursday and Friday….

  37. I very much appreciate that the girls are included. My daughter is very excited about being Chosen for the All Star Team. I know this will be an experience she will carry with her through High School. Thank you for the time and effort to put this event together.
To those parents that didn’t make the team, may your child continue to work and play and enjoy the sport! Everyone is not always picked, its a part of life.

  38. Ben Lewis is the kid from Northern discussed above – he is solid.

My son (7th grader) played at Kernodle, so we played several of theses teams – SW, Jamestown, NW and Northern 2 or more times, plus Kiser, SE and Mendenhal once.

Based on our games, it is hard to believe Quan from Kiser, Brandon from NW or Landry / Patrick from Kernodle didn’t make the cut.

The issue seems to come in when 1 team gets more than 2 kids and others get 1 or none. To make things easier on the coaches voting, I would suggest asking each coach nominate 2 players from their team, to create the ballot. From there, send out the ballots and the top 20 vote getters get invitations to play.

The way it is now, there is no incentive for the AD or coach to respond, since he can’t nominate or vote for his players.

  39. 1 person from kiser ! that is insane ! they beat great teams . they have a great guard . his name is Ronan if i am not mistaken. Griffing Albright is a great on and off the court , im glad he gets the oppurtunity to play in this. There is this other kid i saw play once , his name starts with a B , i think . His last name is Duncan. im not sure but he is pretty great as well.
