Asheboro’s Nick Coe and Emmanuel Jones Sign NLI

ASHEBORO, N.C. – Two Blue Comet senior football players made their post-high school football careers official today, after signing the National Letter of Intent (NLI) this morning on the campus of Asheboro High School. Nick Coe, a three year starter for the Blue Comets signed his NLI to play football at Auburn University, and Emmanuel Jones, also a three year starter signed to play at East Carolina University. Over the past three years the Blue Comets have gone 26-10 overall and 13-0 against Randolph County Schools.

Coe, a defensive end for the Blue Comets over the past three years had 178 tackles over his career, with 34 tackles for loss. He also holds the school record for sacks, with 32.5. In 2014 Coe was ranked second in the state for sacks with 19.5. He has been a two-time member of the First Team All-Conference, and three time selection for 1st Team All-County. He was named Mid-Piedmont Conference Defensive player of the year in both 2014 and 2015. This season he was named 1st Team, All-State by the Associated Press and NCPreps.com. Coe was selected to play in the Shrine Bowl, where elite players from North Carolina take on their South Carolina counterparts.

In addition to all of Coe’s football accomplishments he is also a stellar wrestler, earning the 3A State Championship for the heavy weight division in 2015. Nick claimed the Flo National Championship in 2015 and the National High School Coaches Association National Champion in 2014 and 2015.

“I am really looking forward to playing at Auburn,” said Coe. “I really liked what I saw on my visit. The players and coaches made me feel at home. I am really excited to go to Auburn and hope to win a National Championship”

Emmanuel Jones will attend East Carolina University after being a four-year letter winner for the Blue Comet football program as a wide receiver and defensive back. He holds three Asheboro High School career records, with 99 receptions for 2030 yards and has scored 27 touchdowns during his tenure as a Blue Comet. Jones was a three-time select for First Team All-Conference and First Team All-County. He was named the 2015 Mid-Piedmont Conference Offensive MVP, credited with 18 touchdowns on the 2015 season.

Jones has also been a four year letter winner on the varsity basketball team, and has scored over 1,000 points over his career. He was named All-Conference and All-County three times and was named All-District in 2015. He also was an All-Conference winner for Track and Field in 2014.

“I am happy to sign to play at ECU,” said Jones. “They have a great program and I know I am making the right choice. This is going to be a great experience.”

“They will be missed,” said Asheboro football coach Owen George. “These two individuals have really helped us build our program into what we have today. However, I can’t say how happy I am for these two young men to have such an amazing opportunity. I can’t wait to take a trip to Greenville and Auburn!”

The Blue Comets have a long history of spring boarding student-athletes into athletics after high school. Coe and Jones join the ranks of Jacques Dumas who went on to play at University of North Carolina from 2001 to 2004 and Merceda Perry who also played for UNC from 1997 to 2001. Will O’Briant is currently playing for UNC after walking on in 2013 and Cole Burroughs recently played for North Carolina State also after walking on.
