Elon Softball Readies for Global Experience in Japan

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University softball team will go abroad for the first time in program history as members of the team and coaching staff will travel to Tokyo, Japan, over the Thanksgiving break from Nov. 20-28, as a part of the university’s commitment to students achieving a global experience.

“This is a great opportunity for our student-athletes,” said Elon head coach Kathy Bocock. “We would like to thank everyone at the university including President (Leo) Lambert, the board of trustees and Dave Blank for providing this opportunity for our program. All the players are very excited and we’re looking forward to learning and gaining experiences from a different culture.”

Accompanying the Phoenix during the global experience will be Dr. Carol Smith, associate professor of health and human performance. Dr. Smith will help organize and direct the multiple cultural events that the team will travel to. The Elon team will write a daily journal, reflecting and sharing their experiences during their time in Japan.

Throughout the week, the team will have time to travel around the city and view some of the government offices, residential and business districts while exploring the unique neighborhoods and touristic sites. The players will also visit the famous Tsukiji Market followed by an exploration of the Hama-rikyu Gardens. Later in the week, the team will also visit the Japanese National Baseball Hall of Fame and the Tokyo Dome City.

The student-athletes will also have the opportunity to practice with and compete against softball teams at local universities.
