LYNCHBURG, Va. – The High Point University women’s soccer team fell on the road at Liberty by a score of 1-0 on Saturday afternoon in Lynchburg, Va. Redshirt-junior Kelsey Perrell led HPU with four shots including three on goal.

“I am actually very pleased with our performance against a very good Liberty team,” head coach Marty Beall said. “The only goal we gave up was when we had a player laying on the ground with an injury and they play on and score while we were essentially a man down. The fact that that was the only goal we gave up says a lot about our team defending. I thought our possession in the second half was fantastic so I am looking forward to seeing us move forward from this game.”

High Point drops to 7-3-4 overall and 2-2-1 in the Big South with the loss to Liberty. The Flames improve to 7-6-1 overall and 5-1-0 in conference play.

The Panthers fell behind in the sixth minute after getting caught on the counter by Liberty. Brittany Aanderud played a ball over the top for Jennifer Knoebel who cut past a defender before scoring with a low shot to the corner.

HPU was outshot 15-8 in the game, but had a 6-2 edge in shots on goal. Sophomore Alex Persiani made one save in the contest compared to six for Liberty keeper Holly Van Noord. The Panthers put five shots on target in the second half alone but were unable to find an equalizer.

High Point remains on the road for its next contest, travelling to Asheville, N.C., to take on UNC Asheville on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m. The Panthers earned a 2-1 home win over Asheville in the meeting between the two squads last season.
