#20 New Hampshire Stops Elon Football

DURHAM, N.H. – Facing its first road test in league play, the Elon Phoenix squared off with the 20th-ranked New Hampshire Wildcats and came out on the wrong side of a 37-14 score at Cowell Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The loss dropped Elon to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in CAA Football play, while UNH upped its mark to 3-2, 1-1.

Quotable: “The start was not a great one. Coming in to this game, I think we prepared well. I think we were emotionally ready to play the game, but we just didn’t execute coming out of the blocks. Their first couple of scoring drives, there were a lot of missed tackles and guys just losing their footing which shows you there was some anxiety. We’ve got to get in our comfort zone.” – Elon head coach Rich Skrosky

How it happened: Dalton Crossan ran for 140 yards and four touchdowns to pace the Wildcats’ ground attack that churned out 235 yards. The Wildcats began the game with a four-play, 77-yard drive that saw Crossan go 36 yards on the final play for a score. UNH added another seven to the board when Adam Riese connected with Jordan Powell for a four-yard touchdown. Elon got on the board late in the second quarter when Daniel Thompson tossed a seven-yard TD to Tereak McCray. The Phoenix would score again on a two-yard plunge by B.J. Bennett early in the third quarter.

Inside the box score: Thompson finished with 246 yards through the air on 20-of-41 passing… McCray caught five balls for 69 yards and Corey Joyner added five grabs for 54 yards… Chris Blair led the Phoenix with 10 total tackles… Both Warren Messer and Jack Williams recorded sacks for the maroon and gold.

Notes: Elon now has 16 total sacks in four games, four shy of the total posted by the 2014 squad… Thompson returned to the lineup after missing the last three games.

Up next: The Phoenix will head to Richmond for a 3:30 p.m. kick against the Spiders on Saturday, Oct. 10.
