Elon Selected to Host 2016 CAA Tennis Championships

RICHMOND, Va. – Elon University has been selected to host the 2016 Colonial Athletic Association Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships, the league’s athletic directors approved on Monday, July 13.

“We are thrilled to welcome our friends at CAA member institutions, as well as their families and friends, to our campus next spring for the CAA Tennis Championships,” said Elon Director of Athletics Dave Blank. “We know the value this brings to the local Elon and Burlington community from hosting tennis conference championships in the past and we are excited to do so once again.”

The four-day competition will be held April 21-24 on Elon’s campus at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center, as well as the Burlington Tennis Center.

“We are grateful and excited to host this year’s CAA championship event,” said head men’s tennis coach and director of tennis Michael Leonard. “Our team is thrilled to compete on campus amongst their peers and classmates.”

“Our team couldn’t be more excited about hosting the CAA championship next spring,” said Elon head women’s tennis coach Elizabeth Anderson. “We always appreciate the tremendous support at home matches from the student body and Elon and Burlington community, and bringing this event to campus is going to make for a great atmosphere.”

About the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center
The Jimmy Powell Tennis Center is located on Elon’s campus at 401 E. Haggard Avenue. The facility consists of 12 hard courts separated into bays of three courts each. Two scoreboards were installed at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center in 2013. A 10-foot high, vinyl-coated fence, fitted with nine-foot polypropylene windscreens, captures the court bays. Evening tennis is made possible with low-level lighting and each court is equipped with a state-of-the-art intercom system.

Located at the center of the tennis complex is a two-story pavilion that houses a storage area, a concession stand and a viewing deck. From the viewing deck, competition can be observed in any direction, as well as the beautifully landscaped area between the courts. Shrubs and flowerbeds complement the permanent bleachers next to the two stadium courts, while honey locust trees help to shade the grassy seating area.

About the Burlington Tennis Center
Located at 1402 Overbrook Road in Burlington, N.C., the Burlington Tennis Center is a state of the art facility offering 12 courts. The center’s 12 hard surface lighted courts are positioned in four groups of three courts. A tennis pavilion with a pro shop is located on site offering balls, grips, and racquet stringing. The facility serves the surrounding community, but it also plays host to regional and State Finals for boys and girls high school tournaments as well as sanctioned USTA Tournaments such as the Burlington Futures Novice Tournament. The BTC also hosts several collegiate tournaments.
