East Forsyth’s junior pitcher Brody Lawson brought his best stuff to the mound Friday night against conference foes, Northwest Guilford Vikings. Lawson’s line was 7IP, 0R, 5H, 6K’S, 1 BB, and he looked sharp as he pitched his way around a couple of opportunities for the Vikings to score. Their best scoring chance came in the top of the third inning with two outs, and Lawson got Vikings first baseman, and UNC commit, Cole Aker to ground to short to end the inning. Northwest coach Sonny Gann said postgame, “We’re fighting ourselves at the plate right now. If we figure some things out at the plate, then we’ll be a team nobody wants to see in the playoffs. We’re struggling right now, teams go through it, and we’ll get it figured out, and hopefully be a tough team to beat in the playoffs.”

The Eagles scored the only two runs of the game in the third inning, taking advantage of two of Josh Homol’s four hit batsmen, a clutch RBI double by Landon Mitchell, and an RBI sacrifice fly by Matt Hailey. Landon Mitchell was 1-3 with that RBI double in the third, and a run scored for the East Forsyth Eagles. The other offensive leader was Matt Hailey who went 2-2 at the plate with one RBI.

The Vikings received some great pitching in relief of Homol from Cameron Whitson who pitched 3 1/3 innings: 2K’s, 1H, 1HBP. When asked about Whitson’s performance, Coach Gann said, “Cameron came in and got the out when we made the move, and then did well the rest of the game.” The top offensive performers for the Vikings were Michael Garvey, who was 2-2 with a stolen base, and senior Zack Shoemaker who went 1-3 with a double.

Both coaches mentioned the great defense by their teams, and that if it hadn’t been for the great defenses, it would have been a completely different game. The win gives the Eagles a two-game lead in the conference. When asked about what this win does for his team in the conference, Hyatt said, “It gives us a little of a situation where we have a two-game lead, with four games left. Those four games are against four good teams, and if you don’t show up to play, those could be four losses. We just have to play it one game at a time, pitch it well, but we’re going to have to hit better in those four games, or we’re not going to keep that two-game lead.”

It truly was a well fought defensive battle and a pitcher’s duel. The Eagles just happened to edge out a couple of runs and get the outs they needed behind Brody Lawson to keep the Vikings from scoring.
