BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Alex Martin (Pfafftown, N.C/Reagan) claimed two event victories as Guilford College Men’s and Women’s Track and Field competed in day two of the Jopson Invitational, hosted by Bridgewater College. The meet consisted of Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) schools and other Division III schools. ODAC schools used the meet as a qualified for the ODAC Championship Meet.
Martin claimed victory in the both the 100 meter dash preliminaries and finals, earning spots in the ODAC Championship race later in the season. The freshman won the preliminary race with a time of 11.70 seconds, winning by .08 seconds. Martin advanced to the finals and won the race by a larger margin (.42 seconds) with a time of 11.64 seconds. Martin claimed victory again in the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.42 seconds, winning by .29 seconds. Over the weekend, Martin qualified for the ODAC Championship meet in three events, including the long jump, where he finished third last night.
C.J. Green joined Martin in the top-five of the 200 meter dash, finishing with a time of 24.27 seconds. Green missed third place by .2 seconds.
Yashua Clemons qualified for the triple jump at the ODAC Championship thanks to a third-place finish with a mark of 12.37 meters, the sixth-best in school history.
Andris Goncarovs followed his Friday-evening victory in the 5,000 meter run with a second place finish in the 3,000 meter run, finishing at 9:22.56, the sixth-fastest in school history.
The Quakers boasted two in the top-five in another event as Trent Evans (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds) claimed third in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:03.48. Johnny Sumner joined Evans in the top-five at 2:05.86, just .01 seconds away from fourth place.
Becca Benfield earned the best finish of the afternoon while competing in two field events. Benfield placed sixth in the shot put with a mark of 9.50 meters, just .02 meters away from cracking the top-five. The sophomore also placed eighth in the discus throw with a mark of 25.23 meters, the fourth-best in school history.
Kayla Scott, Khadija Carr, and A’Lexus Newkirk finished back-to-back-to-back in the 200 meter dash to lead the Quaker sprinters. Scott finished eighth with a tie of 31.13 seconds while Carr finished ninth at 31.22 seconds. Newkirk was close behind in 10th place at 31.29 seconds.
Sommer Fanney (Burlington, N.C./Williams) ran the fifth-fastest 3,000 meter run time in school history, finishing with a time of 12:02.88. Molly Anne Marcotte finished after Fanney, placing ninth with a time of 12:24.48 for the eighth-fastest finish in program history.
Coach Danny Cash’s Quakers return to the track next Friday and Saturday, competing in the VertKlasse Meeting at High Point University.
