Greensboro College Women’s Basketball Storms Past Mary Baldwin 77-38

STANTON, VA—The Greensboro college women’s basketball team defeated Mary Baldwin 77-38 on Wednesday evening in USA South action.

Both teams were tied at 5-5; before Chevena Pickard stated a 13-0 run that was finished off by Syerra Troutman to taking an 18-5 lead with 12:03 to go in the half. The next four minutes, Greensboro outscored their opponents 8-3 pushing the lead out to 26-10 with 7:48 showing. Amber Hair then started a 9-0 run extending out the lead to 35-11 with 2:46 to go. The Pride went on to take a 41-15 lead into the halftime break.

In the second half, Pickard scored seven of her 12 points en route to a 12-0 run pushing out to the 61-19 lead with 9:27 to go in the game. Over the next four minutes, The Fighting Squirels outscored The Pride 9-7 getting within 68-28 with 5:42 left. However, Shanita Hampton answered with a 5-0 run taking a 73-29 lead. Greensboro went on to win the game by a final of 77-38.

The Pride shot 40.6 percent from the field on 28-29 shots, while connecting on 8-19 from behind the arc. Greensboro defense had 17 steals, while forcing 35 turnovers for the game.

Three Greensboro players reached double digits, being led by Pickard and Hampton with 12 points apiece. Troutman was close behind with 11 points and a game high four steals. Hair led the way with a game high ten rebounds, with five of them coming on the offensive glass. Kamia Strickland had a team high three assists.

With the win, The Pride will move to 13-4 overall, and 9-2 in USA South play. Greensboro will return to action on Saturday, when they host William Peace University. The game is slated to begin at 2:00 p.m.
