Southwest Guilford beat previously unbeaten Garinger High School in a 3 overtime thriller. Trent Mayberry buried the game-winning goal with 3 minutes left in overtime to send the Cowboys to the third round of the NCHSAA soccer playoffs. Garinger’s magical soccer season came to an end Saturday night at home.
The Wildcats, who have players from seven different countries, fell 3-2 to Southwest Guilford. The teams played 80 minutes of regulation, then two 10-minute overtimes before starting the first of two 5-minute sudden-death overtime periods. Garinger lost in the first sudden-death OT.
Ranked a school-best No. 2 in the Observer Sweet 16 poll and a school-best No. 2 in the N.C. 4A coaches poll, Garinger ends its season at 22-1.
Southwest Guilford (17-4-2) won its third straight match and will play South Mecklenburg at home in the third round.
