HPU Men’s Golf Finishes 16th at Weather-Shortened C&F Bank Intercollegiate

WILLIAMSBURG, VA – The High Point University men’s golf team finished 16th at the C&F Bank Intercollegiate hosted by William & Mary at the par 70, 6,765-yard Kingsmill Resort River Course. The tournament was shortened to 18 holes due to snow in Williamsburg, Va. on Sunday and Monday.

The Panthers shot 299 to finish 16th in the 32-team field. HPU was in the half of the field that only got through nine holes during Sunday’s first round before snow halted play. The course was unplayable on Monday and the tournament was shortened to 18 holes, allowing HPU and 11 other squads to finish the opening round on Tuesday.

“The scoreboard says we finished in the middle of the pack but it doesn’t tell the whole story,” said head coach Greg Flesher. “Unfortunately we caught a bad break by being in the half of the field that teed off on Sunday afternoon and it put us at a disadvantage. However, I thought the team did a great job this week and played much better than the scores might look. I am very happy with the performance and hopefully next time we will have a little better luck.”

Senior Chase Wilson shot a one-over 71 in his round to lead the Panthers. He finished tied for 14th in the tournament. Freshmen McKay Tye and Tommy Dillon and sophomore Charles Valluzzo all finished six-over par with a 76. Senior Brian Sullivan carded a 78 for his only round.

Tennessee took home team honors, shooting a five-over 285 in Sunday’s morning round. Florida State and Michigan tied for second with scores of 287.

Casey Olson of Eastern Michigan and Cory Scuipider tied for the individual lead with rounds of three-under 67. The top golfers in the tournament were under par.

The men’s golf team has one more tournament before the Big South Championship on April 21-23 in Ninety-Six, S.C. The Panthers will first play in the Coca-Cola Invitational on April 15 and 16 in Spartanburg, S.C.

  1. This is great and all but can we get some stories on the Women’s Golf team at HPU. I remember watching one of their players a few years back who went to Southeast Guilford.
