Guilford College has pre-season football All-American

GUILFORD’S NELSON NAMED TO PRESEASON ALL-AMERICA FOOTBALL TEAM

GREENSBORO, N.C. —
* Consensus Draft Services (CDS) named Guilford College rising senior *Jordan
Nelson (Hudson, N.C./West Caldwell)* to its 2010 NCAA Division III Preseason
All-America Team Tuesday. *Nelson*, a 5-10, 170-pound cornerback and kick
returner, made the second-team unit and was among 91 students recognized on
the organization’s Web site (www.condraft.com).

*Nelson*, a 2009 honorable mention All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference
selection, is coming off a record-setting season. He gained the Quakers’
starting lineup in week four of the 2009 campaign and ended up tying the
school record with eight interceptions. He tied for fifth nationally and
second in the conference with 0.8 thefts per game. *Nelson *also contributed
43 tackles (35 solo), which ranked fifth on the team, and broke up four
passes. He twice won ODAC Defensive Player of the Week honors in 2009.
First, after a three-pick performance in the Quakers’ triumph over Southern
Virginia University and again following a school-record setting
four-interception game at Catholic University. The Quakers’ top kickoff
returner, *Nelson *led the ODAC in kickoff returns (28) and yardage (542)
and ranked seventh with a 19.4 yards per return average. His 28 kickoff
returns missed his school record for returns in a season by one and his 542
yards stand fifth all-time at Guilford. In 23 career games, *Nelson *has 63
returns for 1,364 yards and one touchdown, plus 49 total tackles.

Guilford concluded the 2009 season with a 4-6 overall record, 2-4 in the Old
Dominion Athletic Conference. The Quakers lost four seniors from the 2009
team and expect as many as 58 letter winners back in 2010. Guilford opens
the season Sept. 4 with the 14th annual Gate City Soup Bowl versus
Greensboro College at 7:00 p.m. in the Quakers’ Armfield Athletic Center.

  1. what about the Thorpe kid that was a freshman last year? it appears the Thorpe kid made big slash in league play early on but i am not sure how the team or he finished up the final couple of games. i think the Thorpe kid played receiver and maybe some quarterback.

  2. Antwan Thorpe was at Greensboro College last year and he was a wide receiver and one of the best in the nation at the DIII level….He lined up some in the slot and took a few handoffs for runs and did very well in his first at GC…

He played QB in HS(Oxford Webb) and was one of the best in the state of North Carolina, but his height(5’9) hurt his chances of ending up at a larger school on the DI level….

Not sure if he will be back at Greensboro College this season or not, but if he returns he will be a big time player and you will read about him here at the site….

    Antwan Thorpe:Greensboro College….
