Southern Guilford football player Scotty Wayne killed in early morning car crash

Southern Guilford football player Scotty Wayne was killed in an early morning car crash that also injured his Southern Guilford teammate Darren Garcia. Wayne was an outstanding runningback for the Southern Guilford Storm and he had already committed to East Carolina University and planned to enter there next fall on a football scholarship.

Scotty Wayne was the Steak N Shake player-of-the-Game in our GREENSBOROSports.com AM950 first round high school football playoff game last year at Southern Guilford. Scotty Wayne was scheduled to be one of our guests along with his teammate Darren Garcia on the Footall in Focus Show this upcoming Thursday at Shane’s Rib Shack.

Scotty Wayne was a passenger in the car that crashed headed down Highway 85 toward Charlotte this morning at around 8:45 a.m. Wayne and Garcia were passengers in a car driven by a N.C. A&T student and the guys were said to be headed to Charlotte to watch the A&T-N.C. Central football game.

Darren Garcia is still in the hospital listed in stable condition. Garcia is the Southern Guilford Storm quarterback and he is a very gifted academic student at the Guilford County school and he has received several letters from Ivy League schools.

Wayne along with Garcia were both seniors at Southern Guilford High School. Scotty Wayne died in the early morning car crash and Darren Garcia is still in the hospital listed in stable condition.

from wxii.com, one of the first outlets along with GREENSBOROSports.com to report this story:

HIGH POINT, N.C. — A Guilford high school student was killed in a Saturday morning car crash that injured two others.

Police received a 911 call regarding the crash involving two cars at about 8:45 a.m.

A car driven by North Carolina A&T State University student Deandre Thomas, 18, was traveling north on Interstate 85 before getting onto U.S. Highway 64 in Davidson County.

Police said Thomas fell asleep or blacked out and hit a tree. He was not injured.

However, one passenger in the car — 17-year-old Cameron Scott Wayne — was ejected from the car and died at the scene. Police said he was sitting in the back seat and was not wearing a seatbelt.

Wayne was a football player at Southern Guilford High School.

Darren Garcia, another football player at Southern Guilford, was listed in stable condition at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

Another 18-year-old A&T student, whose name was not known, was airlifted to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in critical condition.

Another car was involved when the right wheel and trunk of Thomas’ car flew back onto the road when he crashed into the tree. Driver Donald Moses had no injuries.

Scotty Wayne highlights from GREENSBOROSports.com:
Southern Guilford, behind the 4 TD’s from Scotty Wayne, rolled over Southwestern Randolph 41-7 and this game was a blow-out and we thought it might be close with both SG and SWR coming in at (3-1). The Storm are a convincing (4-1) with Wayne’s two rushing touchdowns and the other two coming on passes from SG QB Darren Garcia. Wayne finished with 110 yards on the ground and 91 yards on just three receptions.

Versus Southeast Guilford:Southern would take advantage of a turnover which gave the Storm great field position leading them to their first score of the game, a 2 yard touchdown run by Scottie Wayne.

Versus Trinity:SG was led last night by Scotty Wayne and his 72 yards on 9 carries and he scored one touchdown, and then Warren Scott had TD runs of 23 and 13 and QB Darren Garcia made his usual contribution with a three yard run for a score.

Southern Guilford got three TD’s from Scotty Wayne and quarterback Darren Garcia had another solid outing as the Storm thundered and rolled past Randleman 37-0.

Southern Guilford got a TD pass from their new QB Darren Garcia and he also ran for two scores as SG took out East Davidson 36-10. RB Scotty Wayne had a long run of 73 yards for another Storm touchdown.

Round one playoffs 2007:Last night I was at the Southern Guilford-Eastern Guilford showdown and it ended up 27-15 with the SG Storm out in front. Southern had strong running from Scotty Wayne, who picked up 101 yards alone on two of his touchdown carries. Wayne finished with 124 yards on just 5 carries.

  1. He was like a little brother to me.
I will never forget him and the times we had together
I just wish he was here today so i could tell him how much i love him
    RIP Cameron Scott Wayne
    I LOVe you

  2. I spent most of my time in the military deployed or living on foreign soil. One thing I will never get use to is the loss of a young life. This year we have lost two area football players, Matt and now Scotty. Both young men loved the game of football. Both young men had bright futures ahead of them. Both young men were loved by many. Both young men will be missed by a community of people.

I hope and pray that each young man or woman reading this post takes inventory of his or her life. Are you taking advantage of your opportunities? These two young men were. Unfortunately, they won’t get the chance to finish what they started. Scotty Wayne was headed to East Carolina on a Football scholarship. He was doing the things necessary to live his dream. Matt Gfeller was fulfilling his dream of playing high school football.

Life is short. You’re only young once. Feel free to add your own cliche’. I guess what I’m trying to say is that many of you have a whole world out there waiting on you. Don’t be afraid to dream. You are young and there is a world of possibilities for you. Take advantage of them. Chase your dreams daily! Enjoy high school. Enjoy being young, but please don’t take life and it’s opportunities for granted.

We need you all of you!

  3. My family would like to express our appreciation for your kind remarks and words of encouragement during this time. Scotty was a remarkable young man. A good young man who dreamed the impossible. As hard as it may be for you to go forward without Scotty on the field, in the classroom, in the neighbor, track field or My Space….where ever each of you may have come in contact with our son, brother, nephew, cousin or grand son do it because Scotty would have wanted you to. Never forget Scotty…each of you touched his life in so many ways and he touched your lives too. May God Bless each of you! “God Is The Light.”

  4. Scotty was an amazing friend and person

RIP SCOTTY WAYNE! <3 #23 forever we miss u boo

  5. To the family of Sotty Wayne: I just want you to know that Scotty was like a son to me, every time he would come to the thrusday night games he would sit with Darren and I and i would always talk to them about girls and to keep their head on straight and to always make their mommies proud. The response I always got from the both of them was “YES MAM”. I can honestly say that I really love those guys and I would always try to make them laugh and they did the same in return. Scotty even promised me that he wouldnt rough up my son CJ to hard when they had to practice together, and I would laugh. I have fond memories of Scotty. His sister is in the classroom with my daughter and has been on outtings with us too. So i will continue to pray for his entire family not just on this week but everyday.love you guys .

We Luv U n U Will be missed by many n will be remembered
    *With Love Today *

We thought of you with love today,
    But this is nothing new,
We thought of you yesterday and the days before that too.
We think of you in silence and
    often speak you name.
All we have now are our memories,
and your picture in a frame.
It broke our hearts to lose you,
    But you didn’t go alone.
A part of us went with you
The day God took you home.

  7. I would like to say I met this kid briefly a couple of weeks ago at a ECU game. My son Torrance Hunt a player at Durham Jordan and a ECU recruit, spoke with him briefly. My prayers are with his family! He seemed like a very nice young man. My son will wear 23 on his helmet in his honor tomorrow night, against Southern Durham. May God Bless the family through this rough time. His time here will not be forgotten.

    God Bless,
    Terry Hunt

  8. To the family of Scotty Wayne: No one could truly feel what you’re feeling in your time of loss, my heart goes out to you and you’re definitely in my prayers. I never knew Scotty personally but knowing of him was something you couldn’t help but do. Both directly and indirectly Scotty was a model for what young men should have strived to be at their age, I know he was an inspiration to my son who attended SG and my 10 year old sons who attend Sumner Elementary. I am proud and thankful that GOD let him grace this earth 17 years and have such an impact on my sons as well as others who’s hearts he touched along the way. He will be forever missed and forever remembered as a wonderful young man both on the field and off. So in closing I want to say THANK YOU SCOTTY!!!

  9. GOD BLESS SCOTTY’S PARENTS AND ALL OF HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS YOU WILL BE GREATLY MISSED AND LOVED BY EVERYONE, THERE WAS NOTHING NEGATIVE ABOUT YOU AND GOD HAS A REAL SOLDIER NOW AND WE LOVE YOU AND MISS U

  10. mann…this is the craziest thing that could ever happen…when i got the news about Scotty i was praying to God it was all i nightmare…but it soon became reality…Scotty was one of the only people i trusted anything with…hes was 1 of my best male friends…he was ALWAYs there for no matter how early or late it was…and when no one else believed in me…he did…he was my rock…hes the reason i started running track and the reason why i stuck with it…even when i wanted to quit he stayed on me to make sure i didnt…THANK YOU SCOTTY…every morning in school or over the summer…i woke up to a text saying “have a good day, to keep a smile on your face, and stay positive!!” that ended with an “i love you Simone…text me when you get this”…to wake up and no longer see that message brings tears to my eyes…&&i caught myself being selfish by thinking “why Scotty?…how am [I] gonna make it without him…[I] need him” but its apparent that God needed him more…i love Scotty and i know hes in a bettter place and watching evertything i do…so from now on EVERYTHING i do will be for Scotty Wayne…
