Paralyzed pro wrestler Lex Luger now relies on inner strength

Lex Luger was “The Total Package,” a buff 6-foot-4, 270-lb. professional wrestler who made $5 million a year while helping to fill arenas throughout the world.

These days, he can barely walk, tips the scales around 185 lbs. and lives in a one-bedroom apartment across the street from the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, where’s he undergoing therapy.

A severe spinal injury from 30 years of football and wrestling struck down Luger while on a cross-country flight last fall. He spent two weeks in intensive care at Stanford University Hospital in California before transferring to Shepherd in November. He’s also still hobbled by double hip replacement surgery in February.

“I was one of the strongest guys on the planet,” Luger said recently. “I was freaky strong before. I was bench-pressing 450 pounds my senior year of high school. I was a freak. Now I can’t lift a one-pound dumbbell.

“But God tells me that mind, body and spirit and what we are as a man is measured not by our physical strength, but our inner strength.”

Luger, whose real name is Lawrence Pfohl, now takes great pride in each day’s small victories. Things like getting showered and shaved on his own in only 30 minutes or standing a little bit more each day. Things like trying to gradually make full amends with estranged family members he took for granted over the years, including his 17- and 21-year-old children.

The new and humbled Lex Luger is a man of strong religious conviction whose faith has helped him remain mostly upbeat.

Luger has taken it upon himself to minister to young patients at the Shepherd Center, often telling them his story of widespread abuse of drugs, steroids and alcohol at the expense of his family and health.

Luger believes he was meant to lift their spirits and give personal testimony to the importance of doing things the right way.

Life hasn’t been easy for MaryAnn Collins and her family from Alabama since Steve, her 23-year-old son, broke his neck during an automobile accident in March and became a quadriplegic. But getting to know the former professional wrestler has helped.

“No matter what,” MaryAnn Collins said, “when Lex comes, he makes him laugh. Just his visits brighten his day. We’re lucky to have a friend like Lex.”

Luger once known as ‘The Narcissist’

It’s a role never envisioned by those who knew Luger before.

“He used to be on the other end of the scale, as far as helping people,” said close friend Steve Borden, the professional wrestler better known as “Sting.”

“He was known as ‘The Narcissist.’ His comfort was first and foremost. If he had still been that way when this happened, he’d probably be dead right now because he probably would have just given up.”

Luger, 50, was on a flight to San Francisco in late October when he began having difficulty moving his neck. Thinking it was simply a case of having sat in an awkward position for too much of the cross-country flight, he tried to jar his neck back into place, only to make his predicament worse.

Luger arrived in San Francisco in considerable pain, but was still able to function. He awoke the next morning, however, paralyzed from the neck down and unable to even call for help. A desperate Luger maneuvered onto the hotel room floor, where he remained for more than four hours.

Doctors at Stanford University Hospital noted massive swelling of his spine from the C6 to T5 vertebrae, attributing the damage to the many disc injuries and bone spurs he’d collected during three decades of football and professional wrestling.

Doctors have told Luger that previous substance abuse problems had nothing to do with his spinal trauma.

Luger remained a complete quadriplegic for more than two months, without as much as bladder or bowel control when he was transferred to the Shepherd Center in early November.

Doctors have told him the swelling usually takes about six months to recede, but it’s unclear how much function he will regain. Luger has gradually improved. He can now stand on his own for brief periods and uses a walker at times.

Motor and other finger skills are usually the last functions to come back with his particular injuries. A complete recovery is a “long shot,” said Dr. Gerald Bilsky, Luger’s physician and Sheperd’s medical director for outpatient services.

In the meantime, Luger has had to re-learn even the most elementary functions, such as going to the bathroom and how to feed and dress himself.

“You just have to rehab every day and take great blessings with what you do have back,” Luger said. “Rehab and try to make what you have stronger. It’s up to the Lord to do the rest.”

Luger has improved enough to be released from the Shepherd Center in mid-March, but he can be found at the facility every day.

He hopes that recounting his story to patients and their families will help spare others his mistakes.

  1. Lex, I am one of your biggest fans, and I loved when you put your opponent in the “torture rack” and I must say that me and my cousins really got a kick out of how incapacitated your opponent was when you dropped him. Personally, I liked the way that you looked into the camera as you were doing it, and you had control of the situation, and I have always seen that I wanted to control things in my life. It hasn’t always worked that way, but just as you have realized, God will get you through any situation, no matter how bleak it may be. I want to applaud you for all of the entertainment that you provided to me over the years and I pray that your health improves. You were one of the most chisled athletes that I have ever seen. Much love to you and your family and please continue your work at the Sherpard center, because I believe that it will help you obtain a full recover. God bless.

  2. Lex,

It’s so good to hear that you’re fighting back and doing so much to help others. Please don’t ever stop. I also believe you could do a great deal to influence the thousands (so many whom you have already influenced) who aspire to be professional wrestlers on the dangers of performance enhancing substances. Professional sports in this country is just beginning to come to terms with the dangers these substances hold for its participants and you know how unstructured pro wrestling’s lower divisions are compared to the primary sports of football, baseball, and basketball. Someone like you can do so much to positively influence young men and women who want to enter the world of wrestling but lack the guidance to do so in a way that will not be harmful to them in the long run. There are too many dead legends and just plain good people from the sport already. You could help young wrestlers to approach pro wrestling as legitimate athletes who can reach their goal without artificial enhancement. (I know you could have but there was no one like you then to show the way.)

  3. Lex, I am happy to see you are improving day to day. Do not give up, as you never did in the ring, and I know you can beat this thing. God will take care of you as you have already found out. I always liked the way you handled yourself and I knew you were a gentleman.

  4. God bless you the total package lex lugar. Keep your head up. Can you come visit hughston hospital in Columbus Georgia sometimes.

  5. God Bless you Lex luger, you were my favorite!!!!! I love you,
remember,,,according to your faith, be it unto you, in jesus name

  6. Lex
You were one of my favorite wrestlers. My prayers will be with you. Remember the promise in Isaiah 53:5 That by his stripes we are healed. Believe it and claim it. Always remember Gods timing is not our timing. Always remember God always comes on time. We don’t understand when things happen to us but remember everything happens for a reason. God has a purpose for all our lives, sometimes he has to get our attention, sometimes it is through tragedy. If God brings you to it he will bring you through it. Also so when trouble comes Faith won’t take you around it Faith wil bring you through it. I am an intercessor prayer warrior I will keep you in my prayers

  8. lex, i’m glad to hear that you’ve found God. You have a huge chance to spread the message of Jesus Christ. a chance that many of us will never see. I hope that you use your time wisely. for those that much is givin much is required. One thing that i’ve learned when times are hard, is that sometimes the Lord, doesn’t always light the whole path ahead, He only lights the next step. God Bless in your new journey. keep your eyes on the Lord, and God Bless You!!!

    In Christ,
    Rodney

  9. Dear Lex,

  10. I attended Christian Union Church of God today to see Lex Luger and hear him speak. What a Blessing he was to me and all that attended there! It reminded me of my grandaddy.

  11. Lex,
I am a retired teacher (almost 60 yrs. old) that is quite educated. Many, many of my peers ridiculed me because I have always been a great wrestling fan. They tried and tried to convince me that it was ridicules and beneath me. Regardless I used to be, I am and always will continue to be a big pro wrestlin fan till my last day. You and Sting, and Rick Flair and so many others helped me escape from my dysfunctional and sad childhood. I know what wrestling is and still I watch it religiously. In addition to teaching public school and college I also taught religious education at the same time and I know you and others brought happiness and inspiration to many common people like myself that grew up in poverty. I will pray for you and I ask you to never give up because God always has a plan for us that we may never know what it is about. God bless you and keep you. Thanks for the entertainment and the great exciting moments.

  12. Iam glad to hear that you are doing better Mr Lugar. God bless you. Hang in there you are going to recover. Keep believing. I have had the honor of meeting and talking to you many times. Take care. I love you brother. Your brother for life. Frank Gonzalez

  13. Dear Lex,
I attended many of the wrestling matches in Daytona Beach at the Ocean Center
when i was in my early twenties. The highlight of one of the events was when you were introduced and came into the ring. We always sat ringside. As you walked around the ring you put your hands to your chest and ripped your white undershirt off.
You looked down at the ringside chairs and threw it right to me. I was so excited and had other girls jumping on me til we ripped it once again. It was very exciting. But today I found out that you had dedicated your life to Jesus and that is even more exciting. I have been a christian for years and that thrills me.I hope you have a full recovery and stay committed. Bless You, Brenda

  14. Lex, you were the greastest in your wrestling days and you’re even greater now because you have dedcated your life to the Lord. Hang in there and keep up the good work. A fan for life, Kenneth

  15. what gose around comes around, you did RADY SAVGES lady in had some many pills just how many people did you real do in?

  16. Lex,

You came to Kristi and Grahams house a couple of monts ago to visit us. It was a pleasure to meet you in person. This was the evening before you spoke at a small Church in Kennesaw Ga. You gave a very touching , yet funny testimonial to a full crowd, then gave autographs with a smile on your face. It was awesome seeing you make so many others smile and feel so fortunate. The Lord has definitly turned your life into a benefit for others. I used to be a wrestling fan and enjoyed seeing you at work, but now you are doing a better thing for wrestling fans and many many others.

Keep it up – Love ya -Robert L.

  17. Lex, I know your life story through the eyes and ears of Steve Baskin who lead you to Christ, mentored you until you could stand on your feet, and stuck by you like a true friend. I know many of your supposedly ‘true friends’ in the wrestling world left you when you were down, financially broken, and lost most everything materialistic that man looks up to and was there only when you had money and fame. You have learned through tragedy and sorrow what God can do with someone who has been broken and bring them back on their feet when one trust Christ completely. It’s been wonderful to see how God is weaving a new story in your life and through you has allowed you to pick up the broken pieces and help others with broken lives. Being married to Steve for 26 1/2 years I know he is a man who deeply loves people for who they are not what they do or have. You are blessed to have him in your life and in turn has taught you what it is to truely depend on the Lord, let God take control, and experience the wonderful things a true Christian can. May you continue to grow, reach out to others, and enjoy the blessings of a man of God. I know God will take care of the other desires of your heart with your children and family. Be strong and keep the faith. Kristi

  18. I pray that god watch over u everyday u were one of my favorite wrestlers and one day i would like to meet u.

  20. Hey LEX,
Keep pushing on. I’m hoping that you MIGHT be able walk and to pump iron again. The Lord works through us in different ways. I’m hoping I will be able to run again without the bottom of my heel hurting, and be able to give it heck in the weight room. I can’t figure out why the Lord won’t heal my heel, or my arm so I can like I say, “Give it heck in the weight room!” At 56 years I think God is going to heal me so I can run and lift weights full force again. None of us wants to hold back. I will say God answers prayers, but not always when we want it to happen.
    Lois

  21. Lex,
My daughter was at the Sheperd Center from Jan. 2008, until March 2008. She met you there. She is still making progress, but it is so slow. She is having to drive 5 hours away for therapy because we live in a very rural area in NC. She is so happy for you and the progress you have made. Her progress however is very slow. She is only able to do therapy 2 days a week. Anyway, I am curious to know what you think of stem cell implants and if you have tried it. Can you give us some advice on what we need to do to get her up on her feet. She tells us everyday that she can’t live and won’t live in a wheel chair the rest of her life. She is 20 now and I feel like she is starting to give up. If I only knew what to do for her to help her get better. Can you please give her some advice. Her address is 3941 Hwy. 163, West Jefferson, NC 28694
Email is windancer1@skybest.com Thank you and God Bless you. Lisa Jones

  22. my thoughts and prayers are with you my friend you were my favorite wrestler ever i know all things happen for a reason and what you are doing now for others is a great thing.

  23. I have the FULLEST confidence in the Shepherd Center. They are Godly people, and I HAVE SEEN them perform miracles, of course, with God’s help. I have a friend who was paralyzed from the neck down last year as a result of a motor bike accident. He was thrown from the bike, and landed face down in a pool of water. He nearly drowned. Was medi-vac’d to a nearby hospital, where he spent a few weeks, and had surgery, Then, was air-lifted to the SHepherd Center, where he lived for a few months. In those few months, he learned to WALK again. He went from being completely paralyzed from the neck down, to WALKING. He still has battles with severe chronic pain as a result of his accident, but is hoping to have a procedure done in the upcoming weeks, which will be performed at the Shepherd Center. It’s a trial with a new pain medication, made from cone snail extract. Unlike opiate-derived meds, you are at alot LESS risk of becoming physically dependent on it, and the dose doesn’t have to be increased because you don’t build up a tolerance for it, like opiates. You are in very good hands there, and I hope for your recovery as well. Take care of yourself, and KEEP the faith, my friend.:)

  24. Lex,
I know you dont or probably wont remember, I was a young man and me and my friends decided to go out one night. We went to a bar that you were at ( we didnt know you would be there) and we were enjoying the evening. I approached you and asked for a autograph but you made a smart little comment in front of the women that were hanging on you. They all got a good laugh while i looked like a red faced ass..i thought to myself how arrogent and cocky you were..you had everything money cars and women and you had the nerve to be that rude to your fans….no i dont wish you any ill will but maybe thats something you should tell people about your life..it still bothers me about how people treat each other and seem to blow it off..nobody believes in practicing do unto others….i pray that you recover and you continue to inspire people with your message..im still a fan of yours and always will be

  25. LEX
NO ONE WILL EVER HAVE OR BRING THE BODY TO WRESTLING YOU DID , JUST AWESOME .YOU COULD HAVE COMPETED IN THE “O” AND WRESTLED AT THE SAME TIME, I LIVE IN OCALA FL AND THERE IS A GUY AT THE GYM THAT I SWEAR IS YOUR BROTHER.6’2 230 -240 COULD PASS FOR YOU ANYWHERE.IT TAKES TIME FOR THE BODY TO HEAL BUT CAN AND WILL.

LEX LUGAR IS AND WILL ALWAYS BE THE TOTAL PKG.

  26. Always wondered what happened to you.I dont know the story of you being paralized. What happened?Hope you get better soon.We are a wrestling family but lost track of you.God Bless

  27. Lex Luger,

I am, more than likely, one of your biggest fans. I have watched wrestling my entire life. I have been wondering and watching to see you return back to wrestling. I seen you a couple of times on TNA Wrestling and was hoping to see you start wrestling there. I have always admired the way you were able to overcome all obstacles. I just heard of what has happened to you and read about. I know that you will overcome this and be 100%. I have faith in you to be able to do the thins you used to be able to do before this unfortunate event.
I had never done steroids but, I was somewhat impressive when I was in my Teens. When I was around 13, I was benching over 250 lbs. It all came to an end not to long after that though when I was in a car wreck and had life threatening injuries. Everyone was told that I would probably be nothing but a vegetable if I came out of my comma. When I awoke, I was unable to do anything for myself. I couldn’t move one entire side and I couldn’t hardly even move the other. I had to learn how to use my arms and legs again. I was nothing but skin and bones. I wanted my life to be over with. If it hadn’t been for my family and me to start believing I don’t think I could have pulled through.
I had followed your career and I feel that your driven to succeed attitude helped me with what I was going through. After reading and knowing now what you have went through and are still going through, it has inspired me work even harder. Thanks for being the Total Package.

LEX LUGAR WILL ALWAYS BE THE TOTAL PACKAGE AND NO ONE ELSE CAN EVER COMPARE.

  28. God Bless you Lex. I wish you a speedy recovery & wish you all the best.
Never give up pal.. There’s only one Lex Luger: The Total Package.
    God Bless You

  29. Hope you recovey Lex. I am a addict and steroids have been hard to stop completely. If you have any advice it would be helpful. Thanks for showing your real strength

  30. Dear Lex,
I did not know about you being paralized. I am so sorry to read about it on the web. The song that “God will make a way, where there seems to be no way” is dedicated to you. “He works in ways we cannot see, he will make a way for thee” Trust in the Lord and lean not to your own understanding. God loves you and still has a plan for your life. I have watched wrestling for many years but mostly when I was a kid. I don’t like it anymore because of the santanic undertones and the women fighting in the ring. It is not a proper thing for women to be fighting. I hope and pray the best for you and maybe one day you will come to California and meet me for lunch or dinner. Thank you and may God richly bless and keep you.

  31. Lex..You are an Inspiration.
I am a martial artist and have high ranks in 5 different martial arts, Black Belt Tae Kwon Do, Red Belt Tang Soo Do, Brown Belt Kuk Sool Won, Orange Kenpo Karate, Blue Belt Aikido, and a former S.C. Champion. I had a 34-1 record. I was also training to get into the Pro wrestling scene I had packed on 30 pounds of muscle and had everything going my way while prepering for my audition for WWE.
In April 2004, I ruptured a disc. My surgeon told me I also had another disc that needed to be replaced. So I a double fusion. The surgery was a flop. Im in more pain now than I was before the surgery. I cant sit nor stand for long periods of time. Im now 190 lbs and in the worst shape of my life. My martial arts and My wrestling days are over, before they even got started at the level i was preparing for.
But through it all..I have found a loving wife and have another business that keeps us going. I also have a baby on the way. God has been good even in the face of troubles and trials. He never promised life would be easy, but he said hed never leave or forsake us.
Take care Lex! You still rock! And youre still the total package!

  32. lex i have been a fan for a long time i didnt know what had happened to you keep the faith. i have had a liver injury myself so i know what your going threw it will get better all things in good time. hang in there buddy!

  33. See what happens when you beat up women. You deserved everthing that has happened to you. Rest in ****.

  34. Lex, there is a lot of support here (and a little hate, let it roll off…), and I’d like to add mine.

I remember watching your career, and enjoying your work. I remember sitting not twenty feet from you in the Gwinnett Mall once, you were with your kids, and I recall the look in your eyes that warned “This is my time with them, back off.” Trust me, I understand that need….

I was pleased to hear you’d found faith; hold it close, it WILL sustain you, more than all the good wishes we can pass along to you. Recover, get better, and lean always on the Redeemer, who will lift you up.

May your life now, and your recovery be a testament to His glory.

  35. Lex, was meaning to google you up for a while after wondering what happened to one of my favorite wrestlers. Use to love it when you “racked” your opponents at the end of your matches. Hopefully things work out for you buddy, take care!

  44. i remember watching him as a kid and wishing i could be just like him. god bless lex luger and family

  45. It is true that God does not care for a man’s outer strength, only his inner goodness of hear: Psalm 147:10 “He delighteth not in the strength of the horse – he taketh not pleasure in the legs of a man.” It does not matter how strong a man is physically. What matter is the disposition of his soul. If Lex Luger has found his soul, he is the better for it. We all die eventually. The state of our souls, whether we are right with God, is most important, not how much money or power we have. Sometimes it takes a great tragedy to realize this. God works in mysterious ways. I wish Lex all the best.

  46. I WENT INTO A COMA FOR 5 WEEKS AND LOST MY STRENGHT AND HEALTH TOO.
I KNOW HOW IT IS HAVING TO LEARN TO WALK, EAT,AND TRY AND COME BACK FROM IT ALL.
YOU WERE ONE OF THE BEST ALONG WITH THE ROAD WARRIORS THAT BROUGHT SO MUCH ENTERTAINMENT TO US.
    THANKS

  47. Lex Luger has always been a great person with tremendous ambition. I met Lex when I was a professional photographer with Wrestlings Main Event. I have talked and photographed Lex on many occasions. I too also had a tremendous setback when I was disgnosed with MS in 2000 but also like Lex I refuse to let this disease defeat me. Lex will overcome any obstacle that faces him as he always has and Lex I hope that you make a strong comeback so that you can mentor to those who will listen. As you once wrote on a photo that I gave to you and one for myself, always your friend in wrestling. Good Luck

  48. I wish you the best Lex You were my favorite wrestler and without a doubt the total package. I am really sorry for what has happen to you God Bless you and may you live for a long long time.

  49. I FEEL FOR YOU MY BROTHER AND NOW THAT I KNOW YOUR SITUATION I WILL SAY A PRAYER FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY. SUCH AS YOURSELF.

LUV U MY BROTHER AND GOD BLESS YOU AND YOURS.
