Die-hard football fans loved this man. He came across as a gentle-giant and on the surface that is how he will be remembered. He was one of the top defensive linemen in the NFL, when he played for the Los Angels Rams and he helped form the Fearsome Foursome, that pro football fans from the late 1960’s to the early 1970’s won’t soon forget.

He was on the televison series “Little House on the Prarie”, with Michael Landon and then later he had his own show as “Father Murphy”.

He was outstanding analyzing the NFL, with the AFL/AFC version on NBC, along side Dick Enberg and he became a household name, as the spokesperson for the FTD Florist….

Merlin even had a little radio feature called “Flower Talk”, with Merlin Olsen, which was sponsored by FTD…..

I don’t ever remember hearnig anyone say a bad thing about this Gentle-Giant….

He is gone now, but never to be forgotten by those who watched him during his playing days up front on the “D” line with Rosey Grier and others back when the Rams were still in Los Angeles…..

Rest In Peace Merlin Olsen and you have earned that well-deserved rest….We will remember him well and will never forget how every big kid that played football back in the day, wanted to be the next Merlin Olsen…..

from espn.com:
SALT LAKE CITY — Merlin Olsen, a Hall of Fame defensive lineman and member of the Los Angeles Rams’ “Fearsome Foursome” who followed up football with a successful television career in “Little House on the Prairie,” NFL broadcasts and commercials, has died. He was 69.

Utah State, Olsen’s alma mater, said he died outside of Los Angeles early Thursday after battling cancer. He was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a cancer of the lung lining, last year.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell issued a statement lauding Olsen as an “extraordinary person, friend and football player.”

“He cared deeply about people, especially those that shared the game of football with him,” Goodell said. “Merlin was a larger-than-life person, literally and figuratively, and leaves an enormously positive legacy.”

Olsen was a consensus All-American at Utah State and a first-round draft pick of the Los Angles Rams in 1962.

The giant from northern Utah joined Deacon Jones, Lamar Lundy and Rosey Grier on the Rams’ storied “Fearsome Foursome” defensive line known for either stopping or knocking backward whatever offenses it faced. The Rams set an NFL record for the fewest yards allowed during a 14-game season in 1968.

The opening part of this is re-printed from March of 2009:

Who is your favorite radio announcer????? Back in the day you had Woody Durham and Mick Mixon doing all the games of the ACC men’s basketball tournament, going wire-to-wire, Thursday through Sunday.

The same could be said for Bob Harris and Danny Highsmith/Mike Waters, Gene Overby and Glen Scott, and Wally Ausley and Gary Dornberg. All the schools were doing all the games for UNC, Duke, Wake and State. The announcers called them all, from start to finish.

Let’s take a look at the lineup for this year’s coverage throughout the Triad/Triangle/Charlotte areas and wherever you can pick up a radio station in your car, bar or very far away from the maddening crowds.

Here’s what we have found to be the coverage so far this year for 2010:

600 WSJS: They are carrying all games with the Wolfpack Sports Network on the air. Boston College-Virginia coverage with Dave Shore and Mike Maniscalco. These guys are from 99.9 the Fan/620 The Buzz in Raleigh/Durham. Gary Hahn and Tony Haynes due up later on for the N.C. State games…..

620 the Buzz:The Tar Heel Sports Network is on the air with Woody Durham, Eric Montross and Jones Angell. Bob Harris and John Roth will be on board for the Duke games from the ISP Network.

790 the Ball/WBLO: Jim Rome is on the air and no games. PrimeTime with the PackMan later on this afternoon with loads of ACC Tournament talk and they might have Mike Giminski on today.

850AM KIX Radio:Used to be the Sports Buzz, but now we have Charley Pride with “Kiss an Angel Good Morning” and Blondie with “The Tide is High and I’m moving on”….We are too, but this is a pretty good station with straight non-stop music and very few commercials….

920AM WPCM:Up on the Beach with Byron Tucker, Marshall Tucker and Professor John Hook and a sprinkle of Charlie Brown thrown in for good measure….

1110 WBT Charlotte:Rush Limbaugh

1150 WBAG: All games are on with the Tar Heel Sports Network. Woody Durham, Eric Montross and Jones Angell at the helm. They will use the Duke Network with Bob Harris and John Roth for Blue Devil games only…

1200AM: Dave Ramsey Show….We will hear N.C. State games with Hahn and Haynes while the Wolfpack remains in the tourney…

1230AM WMFR:Fred Thompson Show with Dom Dijano filling in for Fred…..

1260AM WKXR:N.C. State Wolfpack Network….All games on the air in the Asheboro area…

1300AM:Tar Heel Sports Network…Don’t know where this was coming from, but it was making the daytime rounds/sounds…

1360AM WCHL:Tar Heel Sports Network…All games we assume in Chapel Hill proper….

1440AM:Tar Heel Sports Network….Games on and we take it they are all on in Lexington….

1660AM:Tar Heel Sports Network….Coming in from Charlotte and used to be all sports with WFNZ….We would think all games are on as they were coming in loud and clear with game one today…

Majic 94.1 FM: All games are on today with the Tar Heel Sports Network. Woody Durham, Eric Montross and Jones Angell at the helm. Woody is really at the helm and you better keep your hands on your side of the car because the steering wheel belongs to the “Wood Man”.

98.1 FM WBRF Galax, Virginia: Using the ISP Network with Bob Harris and Dave Odom for the Virginia-Boston College game. They try and bring a total ACC-type feeling to their coverage on ISP and not just a Wake Forest approach with Stan Cotten and “The Dinger” doing all of the announcing. Stan and Mark will be on board for all Wake Forest games from the tournament…

Country Legends 98.3 FM: They will carry the Duke games only with Bob Harris and John Roth.

101.1 FM WZTK: FM Talk 101.1 will carry Wake Forest games only with Stan Cotten and Mark Freidinger.

101.5 FM WRAL:N.C. State games only…..

*****There’s a look at the coverage and if we have left anybody out, then let us know….*****

Afternoon DeFight from 2-6pm…Anything crazy going on?????

Got any new Gripes or Complaints?????

This is the box for Thursday March 11, 2010. We are taking those gripes and complaints and we have to remind you to keep it real on your subject matter.

We will be cleaning out the box at the end of each day and we may have to do some cleaning throughout the day if the material gets too thick.

Local gripes or complaints, National gripes or complaints. Is there anything that is rubbing you the wrong way? How about that coaching change or the kid that just left one high school/college and is transferring to another? What about the kid that got left off the All-Conference team or the All-State team?

Is there a school board member that really has you upset???

Let us know, and by the way, do you have anything new for us today?????
