GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – You never can be sure where momentum will come from during a baseball game.

Wake Forest almost had it in the third inning against North Carolina Wednesday night, but the Tar Heels took it away with a terrific defensive play. Center fielder Chaz Frank threw out a runner at home plate and UNC ultimately went on to a 6-0 victory on the first day of the ACC Baseball Championship at NewBridge Bank Park.

The Tar Heels (43-13) will play again today at 3 p.m. against Miami, a team that swept them during the regular season. Wake Forest (32-23) will meet NC State at 7 p.m.

Frank’s play was early but significant.

“It was kind of a bang-bang play at the plate that went against us and it was a big momentum swing,” said Wake coach Tom Walter.

North Carolina’s Mike Fox agreed it was a huge play.

“The first team that scores, the momentum is in their dugout and all of a sudden we’re playing from behind,” he said. “In baseball momentum can be short-lived. They get it with a base hit and we take it away with a great throw to the plate. I do think that was a big part of the game even though it was early.”

I was taking in the games out in the Grand Stand last night, in the GreensboroSports.com luxury box, if you will and I saw something that I had never, ever, seen before…..

We are sitting out there during the North Carolina-Wake Forest game and not much at all is really happening….There is baseball going on and North Carolina did have that 5-0 lead, but there is no real extra special excitement in the air….

Then all of the sudden, here comes a baseball flying towards us in the air…..There is something in the air and it is an official ACC Tournament baseball heading right our way, like a meteor coming in from outer space, be it a small white sphere meteor at that….

Well, I was out in the GreensboroSports.com luxury box along with Don Moore(GreensboroSports.com) and with Robert Stutts, the assistant softball coach at Grimsley High School….

Sometimes those baseballs can be like magnets and this was an attration toward Robert Stutts and the ball was being drawn his way and after you hear the crack/clink of the bat, you find the ball and “Here it comes”…..Right at Robert Stutts and now he has his chance to make the ‘big play’ and you hear and then see the ball smack his hand and then you see it fall aimlessly/helplessly back on to the field, in the bullpen area…..

Robert Stutts had his chance and he failed to make the play, but some of the fans that came by afterward, said the play was shown on National TV, during the Raycom Sports Network broadcast of the ACC Tournament, on FOX Sports Television….This turned out to be at least one of the key ‘Plays of the Day’, on the opening day of the 2012 ACC Baseball Tournament at NewBridge Bank Park…..Robert Stutts had a shot, but he came up just a bit short…..

The Carolina players in the bullpen did toss us a complimentary ball back up our way and we gave it to some kids, that were out in the Grand Stand area, with their parents……

That was the first time that I had ever seen anything like that at any baseball game….History was made last night, at NewBridge Bank and there is a chance that we will never see anything quite like that again….I have been going to baseball games for many years and have never, ever, been right on top of a play like that, where the baseball is coming your way and it hits right beside you…..The baseball is white, at least all of the new ones are and last night the little white ball caused a black and blue spot on Robert Stutts hand and this was again, what they call in business, ‘The Play of the Day’…….Wasn’t really a clean play, but the sight and sound of that ball hitting a bare hand, were a sight to behold….

Will this happen again??? The only way to find out for sure, is to head out to the ballpark for the ACC Baseball Tournament and be sure to look for Robert Stutts when N.C. State meets Wake Forest tonight at 7pm…..Robert will be the one in the Grand Stand wearing the bright Red N.C. State shirt and waving his dark black and blue hand…..(Don Moore of GreensboroSports.com will be along side Mr. Stutts in the Grand Stand.)

As our old friend Charlie Harville used to say and he said it well, “We’ll see you at the ballpark”…..(NewBridge Bank Park for the ACC Baseball Tournament)

*****Look for us in the Grand Stand for N.C. State vs. Wake Forest at 7pm….*****

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University baseball team rode a strong pitching performance by Jarod Avidon and some timely hitting to a 7-1 win over UNC Asheville in a Big South Tournament elimination game on Wednesday at Willard Stadium. The Panthers will play the loser of the game between Liberty and Campbell on Thursday.

“It all started with pitching and Jared Avidon was sensational for the second-straight start,” head coach Craig Cozart said. “I am very proud at the way he has performed at the end of the season. The guys in the middle of the order drove in runs, Devin Bujnovsky and Josh Spano had great at bats. It feels good to be playing tomorrow.”

Avidon picked up his second-straight win for HPU, going six innings and allowing just one run on six hits and five walks with five strikeouts. Avidon pushed his scoreless innings streak to 13-2/3 innings before allowing a run in the bottom of the fifth. Will Resnik and John Maloney combined to pitch a scoreless final three innings allowing just three hits while striking out four.

Ryan Dunn took the loss for UNC Asheville, going just three innings and allowing five earned runs on nine hits and one walk with four strikeouts.

Juniors Ryan Retz and Devin Bujnovsky and freshman Josh Spano all went 2-4 from the plate with two RBI. Spano and fellow freshman Dane McDermott each scored two runs to lead the team.

The win improves High Point’s record to 27-30 overall while UNC Asheville finishes its season with a 25-30 record. With the win High Point becomes the first No. 7 seed to win a game in the Big South Baseball Championship since 2000. The win is also the Panthers’ first over UNC Asheville in the tournament in four tries.

High Point jumped on the board in the top of the second inning as Spano was driven in on an RBI single by Retz. Spano earned a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a single by Bujnovsky before coming around to score on Retz hit into left field.

The Panthers broke the game open in the top of the third inning, scoring four runs to take a 5-0 lead. McDermott led off with a bunt single. After a fly out by Ryne Rush, HPU got back-to-back singles from Spencer Angelis and Spano with the second scoring McDermott. Bujnovsky got the big hit of the inning with a bases-clearing triple to right center and then scored the final run of the frame on an RBI single back up the middle by Retz.

The Bulldogs got a run back in the bottom of the fifth when Jordan Lurie scored on a wild pitch by Avidon but High Point responded right back in the top of the sixth with an RBU single by Rush. Mike Miedzianowski got on base on a throwing error by the shortstop and advanced to third on a Willie Medina double ahead of Rush’s first hit of the tournament.

McDermott manufactured one last run for HPU in the top of the ninth inning drawing a leadoff walk and stealing both second and third before coming home to score on Spano’s second RBI single of the day.

High Point advances on to the third day of the Big South Tournament and will play the loser of the game between Campbell and Liberty who each won their opening round game. First pitch for the game is scheduled for 7 p.m.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s Eleanora Keene (Wittman, Md./Gunston Day School) was one of 16 students named to SynapseSports.com’s NCAA Division III Women’s Lacrosse All-Rookie Squad Wednesday.

Keene, a 5-7 midfielder, earned First Team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) recognition earlier this month after leading the league with a school-record and conference-best 128 draw controls. Through games of May 20, Keene stood eighth among NCAA Division III leaders with 7.11 draw controls per game. She more than doubled Luisella Perri’s ’99 former school record of 57 and already ranks fourth among Guilford’s career leaders.

Keene also topped Guilford’s freshmen with 31 points on 27 goals and four assists, which ranked fourth among the Quakers’ scoring leaders. Keene picked up a school-record 17 draw controls in her first college game, a 17-16 Quakers’ win at Berry College Feb. 18. The contest marked one of four in which she had at least 10 draw controls. She also scored a career-high five points in the contest on four goals and an assist. Keene also scored four times in the Quakers’ Mar. 21 ODAC win over Sweet Briar College.

Keene helped head coach Matthew Grosso’s Quakers to an 11-7 overall record, 7-2 in the league. Both marks set Guilford standards for wins in a season and are among the 18 school records tied or broken this year. The Quakers shared second place in the ODAC’s regular-season standings and reached the league tournament semifinals for the first time since 1992, Guilford’s first year in the conference. Grosso expects 12 letter winners back for the 2013 season, including Keene.

State avoids the upset-minded Miami Hurricannes……North Carolina had no real problems with Wake Forest, but the Deacons just stayed with the same pitcher almost all night long…..We need to get Don Moore and Robert Stutts thoughts on this one……

Finals
Game One:
Georgia Tech 5
Florida State 4

Game Two:
N.C. State 3
Miami 2
Down 2-1, N.C. State comes back to win on a bases-loaded walk, in the bottom of the 9th inning….

Game Three:
North Carolina 6
Wake Forest 0
Luis Paula(P) from Northeast Guilford High School was on the hill tonight for the Tar Heels…Luis came in during the top of the 5th inning and faced one batter and he got him on a groundout…Luis came back out to start things off on the mound in the top of the 6th and faced one man and then the Heels went to their bullpen….North Carolina also had Jordan Parks(Glenn HS) as a starter in the outfield and we also saw Adam Griffin enter the game as a sub in the outfield and Adam came in the 7th inning…..Good to see our local guys out there and involved in full force for the Heels….Luis Paula, as a freshman, was out there pitching in a tight situation in a key ACC Tournament contest…..Good job guys……

The North Carolina-Wake Forest game was the only game that I was able to attend today…….

Dave Glenn had this as a topic on his radio sports talk show today and I think we have done this here the site before, but maybe not, so here goes with a few to get us all started and this is a great topic and it does get you thinking…..See how many new ones you can bring to the table and lay out your best ones, with a few other good ones mixed in…..

They had Archie Manning with Peyton and Eli as one of the tops today…
Then there was Bobby Bonds and Barry Bonds and Dave Glenn said this was number one all time…
Then they had the Pettys, with Lee, Richard, Kyle, and Adam and then the Earnhardts with Dale and Dale Jr. and didn’t Dale Sr. have a dad(Ralph) that drove down in Concord or somewhere??? And they tossed in the Allison’s too with Bobby and Davey/father and son….

But what about Tug and Tim McGraw….Tug was a World Series winner with the Phillies and Tim was a very successful high school quarterback down in Alambam or Mississippi, or somewhere….And what about Kobe and Joe Bryant…..Dave may have mentioned them, but they are big from the past and present, with Joe ‘Jellybean’ Bryant with the 76er’s and Kobe today with the Lakers….

What about a bunch from wrestling with Angelo Mosca Sr. and Angelo Mosca Jr……Dory Funk Sr., and then Dory Funk Jr. and Terry Funk….Rick Flair and then David and Reid Flair….Bob Orton Sr., then Bob Orton Jr. and then Randy Orton….

You go back to baseball and you have Ray Boone, Bob Boone and Brett Boone….Ken Griffey Sr. and Ken Griffey Jr. and the two of those together may be equally as good, as Bobby and Barry Bonds….Maybe not the same exact numbers, but equally as good talent-wise…..

In hockey you had Bobby Hull and his son Brett and I think that Gordie Howe had some kids that played….(Didn’t they have three Howes on the same team at one time?) Maybe the Houston Aeros of the WHL with Gordie, Mark and ???

In wrestling again, what about the Von Erichs…Fritz, David, Kerry, Kevin, Mike and Chris…All of them but, Kevin dead……You had the Hart Foundation with Stu the dad and then Brett, Owen, Bruce and others…..

In the announcing of sports you had Jack Buck and then Joe Buck, Marty Brenneman and his son(Tom)…Woody Durham and then Wes and Taylor Durham…..You had all the Alberts with Marv, Steve, Al and the like, but I think they were all brothers…..And those lists go on and on for us and throw in a few more while you are at it today…….

N.C. State-Miami game set to start in 8 minutes(3pm) at NewBridge Bank Park…..

from www.wralsportsfan.com:

NC State will trot junior Ethan Ogburn out to the mound for the 3 p.m. contest against No. 6 Miami (34-19, 16-14 ACC). Ogburn is 4-3 on the year with a 3.04 ERA. NC State (38-15, 19-11 ACC) took one of three in their regular-season series finale against FSU last weekend and are saving the ACC Freshman and Pitcher of the Year, Carlos Rodon, for later in the week.

Wolfpack outfielder Ryan Matthews enters the tournament as one of the nation’s hottest players holding a 21-game hitting streak and blasting six home runs in the last seven games. He was named the NCAA player of the week last week.

Freshman Trea Turner, the nation’s leader in stolen bases with 54, needs just nine more to set the ACC record.
