Game Report on Southwest Guilford-Dudley Boys Basketball:SWG Cowboys led by Thompson, Turner and Butler run past Panthers with 33-point victory

The Cowboys of Southwest Guilford hosted the Dudley Panthers tonight in the inaugural Piedmont Triad 3A Conference tournament. The #3 seeded Cowboys swept the #6 seeded Panthers in the regular season, but the most recent one came down to the wire, with Southwest winning at the final horn.

Southwest came into tonight finding their groove, having won 3 straight, including a strong victory over Mount Tabor who was ranked #3 in the State. The Panthers ended the regular season on a 4 game skid. Both teams hoped to increase their playoff stock headed into next week.

Dudley wasted no time as they won the tip and quickly got the ball inside and took the early 2-0 lead. The Cowboys responded on their opening possession to tie it up 2-2. The Panthers came right back down and reclaimed the lead with another bucket at 4-2, but the Cowboys quickly reclaimed the lead on a three pointer to go up 5-4 at the 6:40 mark. The Panthers had one more answer in them to take their last lead on the night at 6-5 with 6:23 to play. Southwest turned on the jets and controlled the tempo and used at 16-2 run to go out 21-8 that was capped with an emphatic dunk in traffic by Jay’Den Turner at the 3:17 mark. The final minutes were sloppy as both teams seemed to be fatigued and the Panthers mustered a single bucket that closed the scoring on the opening frame at 21-11.

The Cowboys found the gas pedal again and sprinted back out for a 13-0 run that got the score to 34-11 at the 3:50 mark. The Panthers chipped away and got as close as 35-19, but a quick 5-0 spurt got it out to 40-19. The final 30 seconds had both teams successfully get the ball up court quickly and trade baskets and the half closed at 42-22.

The Cowboys kept the Panthers at arms length as Dudley kept on fighting and wouldn’t let the lead get out of hand. Another quick 5-0 spurt that closed the frame got the tally up to 63-38.

The Cowboy’s bench allowed the Dudley Panthers to start the final frame with a pair of made free-throws that got it to 63-40. However, the final blow was another 7-0 run by the Cowboys that got it out to 70-40. The Cowboys full roster helped contribute in the second half as they continued their current success and cruised out for the convincing 87-54 win to advance in the Piedmont Triad 3A Conference Tournament.

The Cowboys will play the winner of Mount Tabor and Western Guilford on Wednesday night at Mount Tabor. The Panthers were led by Tim Boulware with 13 points.
