Elon Men’s Tennis Earns Two Victories on Opening Day

ELON, N.C. – Elon University men’s tennis picked up a pair of convincing victories on opening day of the 2018 spring eason, topping North Carolina A&T 7-0 and NC Wesleyan 6-1 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on Saturday, Jan. 13.

MATCH 1 RUNDOWN: Elon 7, North Carolina A&T 0
The Phoenix cruised through doubles with a pair of 6-4 wins at Nos. 1 and 2 and a 6-0 sweep at No. 3. Leading 1-0 heading to singles, Jacob Bicknell breezed to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 4 to make it 2-0 and Neal Port made it 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 3. After Taylor Foote clinched the win with a 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6, freshman Camilo Ponce earned a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 2. Salvador Mijares and Louis Rico then finished off the sweep with Mijares taking a 7-5, 6-0 win at No. 1 and Rico a 7-6 (6), 6-3 triumph at No. 5.

MATCH 2 RUNDOWN: Elon 6, NC Wesleyan 1
In the second match of the day against a Division III team that went 20-5 in 2017 and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament, the Phoenix earned a 6-1 victory behind a pair of singles wins from Ponce and Kyle Frankel and a strong doubles win by the two at No. 2. While Nos. 1 and 3 doubles went to tiebreakers, Ponce and Frankel eased to a 6-2 win to pace the Phoenix in doubles action. Once in singles, Frankel made it 3-0 with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 before Felipe Osses-Konig clinched the win with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4. Felipe Sarrasague at No. 1, Mario Paccini at No. 2 and Ponce at No. 4 also picked up victories in the match with Sarrasague and Paccini both winning 6-1, 6-2 and Ponce winning 6-3, 6-3.

The Phoenix will start a six-match stretch away from the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center with a Saturday, Jan. 20, neutral-site match against No. 20 South Carolina at Davidson. First serve against the Gamecocks is set for 11 a.m.
