The Greensboro College men’s basketball team rallied from a second half defici,t but came up on the short end of an 84-81 overtime final at Methodist on Tuesday night. Damian Dixon led a group of four Pride players in double digits scoring with 17 points. Brian Thomas added ten while Donald Anderson and Devonta Davis contributed with ten apiece in the loss.

Greensboro controlled the opening minutes of the game, building up a 23-14 lead at the 10:40 mark in the first half. Things went south following that point, as the Monarchs opened up a 23-5 run to take a 37-28 advantage with 1:36 to play in the first frame. The Pride would go into the half trailing, 41-32.

The deficit would grow to as many as 15 in the second before Greensboro went on a run of its own. Trailing 62-52 with 8:16 to go, Anderson buried a three-pointer to trim the margin to 62-55. Davis added a trey on the next possession, bringing The Pride to within 62-58.

Greensboro continued to chip away, climbing to within three on a couple of different occasions, before a Brock Moorman basket made it a one point game, at 73-72, with 1:26 remaining. After two Methodist free throws, Davis hammered home another three to knot the game up at 75-75 with 18 seconds left in regulation. The Pride defense would buckle down and make a stop in the closing seconds to force overtime.

The Monarchs scored the first points of the overtime session and were able to hang on to the lead despite a last second opportunity for Greensboro. A T.J. Holman free throw cut the score to 84-81 with 24 seconds to go and Chakiris Moss came up with a clutch steal.

Down by three points, following a time-out break, the ball was placed in the hands of Dixon for some last second heroics to force a second overtime. Dixon’s three-point try, however, was off the target as The Pride dropped their second consecutive game.

Greensboro finished the night shooting 38%. The defense forced 17 steals and 26 total turnovers.

The Pride fall to 12-6 on the season and 4-2 in the USA South. Greensboro will host Ferrum on Saturday. Game-time is set for 4 p.m. at Hanes Gym.
