The story goes that Michael Jordan got cut from his high school basketball team, as a 10th grader back in 1978 and he did not make the varsity, but he did play on the JV team at Wilmington Laney that season…..His old coach, the one that people say cut Jordan and caused MJ to get movtivated to become the ‘greatest basketball player that ever lived, that coach, Clifton ‘Pop’ Herring says, it’s all a lie and “It’s a lie that you continue to tell”….That’s what ‘Pop’ told Sports Illustrated this week and here it is, his story and ‘Pop’ Herring tells the Charlotte Oberver that he is sticking to that story and he will take it with him to his grave..It is almost like ‘Pop’ Herring is saying, It’s a lie, I didn’t cut that sucka….Kind of putting it into boxing terms there…..Good read and read on…..

Herring says he’s still haunted by an urban legend regarding Jordan: In 1978, the story goes, Herring cut Jordan, then a high school sophomore, from the basketball team at Wilmington Laney High.

“It’s a lie that you continue to tell,” Herring tells Sports Illustrated.
