Newport News Apprentice Downs Guilford in Controlled Scrimmage‏

Still watching for Justin Parker(Southern Guilford) and David Moore(Grimsley) in that Quaker offensive backfield and I remember playing against the Shipbuilders from Newport News back when I was in college and in those days they were coached by former Wake Forest quarterback and NFL mainstay Norm Snead.

I have often wondered if Norm Snead is related to the Snead kid that is the current QB at Ole Miss. The Snead kid quarterbacking Ole Miss is outstanding and will lead the Rebels to many SEC victories this season. Ole Miss almost knocked off Wake with Snead at the Rebel helm last season in Winston-Salem…….

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Thomas Mason booted two field goals and the Newport News Apprentice School scored two defensive touchdowns in a 32-13 victory at Guilford College Friday in a controlled football scrimmage in the Armfield Athletic Center.

The teams practiced punts and kickoffs before a little over a quarter’s worth of live scrimmage between the first-team units. The second-string took over for the rest of the second quarter. After working on two-minute drills and overtime possessions, the rest of the reserves played a final quarter.

Sam Arnold rushed for a game-high 11 yards on 64 carries for the Builders, who outgained the Quakers on the ground, 158-15. Carl Powe added 53 yards on six carries before leaving the field with a second-quarter injury. Starting quarterback Phil Carella scored on a two-yard run early in the second quarter to give the guests a 17-0 lead. Thomas Mason booted a 34-yard field goal to end Apprentice’s first series and Louis Norwood returned an interception 44 yards for a touchdown late in the opening quarter.

Guilford’s lone first-half score came on a 39-yard touchdown pass from freshman Chris Winiecki to Robert Boyett in the second quarter. Winecki scrambled wildly to avoid the oncoming Builders’ pressure, while Boyett stayed downfield and was wide open in the secondary.

Junior quarterback Billy Watkins completed 10-of-18 passes for 91 yards for Guilford and gained a team-high 19 rushing yards on five carries. Sophomore Cody Latimer made a game-high five receptions for 50 yards.

Apprentice’s Anthony Duckworth returned a blocked field goal 66 yards for a score, spoiling the Quakers’ first two-minute drill of the third quarter. Backup quarterback Bryan Shahlamain hooked up with Bryan Cain from 47 yards on a Builders’ two-minute drill to cap Apprentice’s scoring.

Guilford rookie quarterback Dontae Jefferson threw a 50-yard touchdown pass to Chris Heflin for the only score of the scrimmage between the third- and fourth-teamers.

Marlon Lane paced Apprentice’s defense with five tackles, including one of the Builders’ six sacks. Da’Shawn Lindsay made a team-best five stops for the Quakers.

Guilford opens the season in earnest Sept. 5 at Greensboro College at 1:00 p.m. Apprentice opens the same day at Malone College in Canton, Ohio.
