Former President Bill Clinton speaks out on the death of Kay Yow

RALEIGH (AP) – Former President Bill Clinton says he admired former North Carolina State women’s basketball coach Kay Yow for the way she lived during her two-decade fight with cancer.

Clinton opened a talk at N.C. State on Monday by honoring Yow, who died Saturday at age 66.

The Hall of Fame coach was with N.C. State for 34 seasons and coached a gold-winning U.S. Olympic team just a year after she was diagnosed.

But for many fans, she was best defined by her unwavering resolve while fighting breast cancer. She raised awareness and money for research and stayed with her team through the debilitating effects of chemotherapy treatments.

Clinton said he’s a fanatical basketball fan and “admired her enormously.” Clinton, whose mother died of breast cancer, was in Raleigh to speak about national and international policy.
