Grimsley, Page, Ragsdale, winners in playoffs/SEG and VCS season’s over

May 10th, 2008 by Andy in High School

Based on the scores we had called in to Greensborosports.com and AM950 radio last night we had three teams that claimed first-round victories and two teams that saw it all end last evening.

We will have more scores throughout the day but here is what we have from last night so far as of Saturday morning at 9:05am. If you have a score for us please leave it in the comment box and we will add it to what we have collected already.

Page pulled off a huge round one upset by topping East Burke 2-1 on the road with Zach Kornblum tossing a two-hitter. Page will join the Grimlsey Whirlies in round two as the Whirlies move to (18-6) on the season after their 3-2 home win over Charlotte Myers Park. Senior Pat Oechsli hit a solo home run for Grimsley. George Carter doubled home Matt Nettesheim for the win in the 9th inning to give the Whirlies the victory. This one went nine, must have been a good one.

Ragsdale avoided any type of upset bug, with the Tigers defeating Anson County 5-1 in Jamestown. Ragsdale will travel to face the Glenn Bobcats in round two on Tuesday night. Billy Stone hit a HR and Nick McBride struck out 16 for the Tigers on Friday night.

The Southeast Guilford Falcons made it all the way to the State 3-A finals last season but this year they are done after round one. Lake Norman spoiled SEG’s season with a 6-5 final tally and LN moves on to the second round and SEG will hang up their cleats, Post-Season over, before it really got started. You have to hate it for the six SEG seniors(Cam Cockman, Austin Moyer, Jeff Medley, Justin Venable, Eric Seders, and Pat Nisbet).

Southeast Guilford may have been caught off-guard by the Lake Norman offense as the LN team hit two home runs and raced out to an early 3-0 lead that became 5-0 and 6-0 before SEG could get anything going and the Falcons loaded the bases in the fifth and seventh innings and still couldn’t get that extra run home to tie it up and give themselves a chance for a victory.

The Vandalia Vikings lost to Wilson Christian 8-4 in their state semifinals and for Coach Luke Oates and VCS, they came up a game short of the finals this season and will finish at (15-5).

Other scores that we have gathered up this morning include Northeast Guilford over Harnett Central 3-1, Rocky Mount tops Dudley 9-0, and East Forsyth handled Douglas Byrd 7-4.

Thanks to Rusty Lee(Page), Brian Rose(Grimsley), Mike Raybon(Ragsdale), Keith and Leslie Miller(SEG) and Coach Oates(VCS) for sending us along those scores from last night. If you have other scores or comments about last night’s games please leave them in the comment box…..Thanks, AD.

In other action it was Northwood over Eastern Guilford 8-4 and Orange past Southern Guilford 15-3. The Southwest Guilford Cowboys defeated Porter Ridge 3-1 with Blaine McCraw getting the start and Esterlin Paulino working one inning of relief. Brett Underwood and Will Kellam led the Cowboy hitters. SWG will face Lake Norman on Tuesday at Southwest.

In the East Forsyth 7-4 victory over Fayetteville Douglas Byrd, the Eagles were paced by three home runs, one each from Ryan Dull, Luke Dunlap, and Travis Starbuck. Next up for the Eagles will be Watauga comnig to Kernersville on Tuesday.

Still nothing in on the Western Guilford-Triton game. Other round two action set for Tuesday will see Grimsley(18-6) at Huntersville Hopewell(22-4), Page(7-14) at Audrey Kell(22-4) , Northeast Guilford(14-10) at South Granville, Ragsdale(20-7) at Glenn(21-5), and again Lake Norman at Southwest Guilford(17-9)…..

William Graves of Southern Guilford won the 400 meters at the State 2-A Track meet yesterday at N.C. A&T in a time of 48.29 seconds. Congrats to Greensborosports.com reader William Graves, All-Conference football, #2 in the State in wrestling at the 152 pound weight class, and #1 in the State in the 400 meter run on Friday at A&T.

Nick Hogan(Hulkster’s son) on the HOT SEAT!!!

May 9th, 2008 by Andy in Professional

Nick Hogan pleaded no contest rather than guilty to the charge of felony reckless driving involving a serious bodily injury on Friday. The court hearing is being streamed live on TMZ.com. Portions of the hearing have also been airing on MSNBC.com.

Hulk Hogan and Linda McMahon are seated behind Nick and his attorney. Brooke Hogan is seated next to her mother, and a woman (believed to be Linda’s mother) is sitting between Brooke and Hulk. You can watch the footage at TMZ.com.

Edward Graziano testified that Nick Hogan acted like a child who didn’t want to visit his grandmother when he visited John Graziano, the critically injured passenger of his car wreck, in the hospital. Graziano testified that Nick was more concerned with skateboarding and shooting dart guns than visiting his son. He also stated that Nick showed no remorse over the wreck, and said the Hogan family has been insincere in showing their concern.

HS football game:Making the Move to Myrtle Beach…..

May 9th, 2008 by Andy in High School

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.
A top high school All-Star football game is moving to the Grand Strand.

The Offense-Defense All-American Bowl will be held at Coastal Carolina’s Brooks Stadium next January, according to Offense-Defense Sports president Rick Whittier.

The high-school game was last played at Miami’s Orange Bowl, and was the last game held there before its demolition.

The game features 88 of the country’s top high-school seniors.

Whittier said it made sense to hold the game in Conway because Offense-Defense Sports is headquartered in nearby Myrtle Beach.

Moore has done it again, this time he’s Rookie of the Year…..

May 9th, 2008 by Andy in College

This time it’s HUGE news for the kid that just last year was playing for the Grimsley Whirlies and used to be on all of the Greensboro Batting Center’s travel teams and he was in the Colt World Series a few years ago and used to play at the Pleasant Garden Recreation Center and he used to eat his post-game meals at T. Cooper’s Deli and his mom Sharon, his dad Kevan, his sister Megan, his grandmother Patsy, his grandfather Larry, and his old coach and mentor Alan Ashkinazy; they are very proud of Clint Moore and job he has done in his first year at West Point with the Army Black Knights. This has to be a great Mother’s Day weekend present for his mom and good to luck to Clint in this weekend’s Patriot League conference tournament.

Clint Moore Named Patriot League Rookie Of The Year
Clint MooreClint Moore

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army head coach Joe Sottolano knew Clint Moore was a gifted ball player when the Black Knights’ field boss began recruiting the Black Knights’ rookie shortstop out of North Carolina two years ago. Now, the rest of the Patriot League is aware of that fact, as well.

Following a stellar debut season in which he’s ranked among conference leaders in several offensive categories, Moore has been selected Patriot League Rookie of the Year, it was announced by conference officials on Thursday.

Army’s offensive catalyst, Moore is batting .333 with 11 doubles, two triples, four home runs, 40 runs scored, 32 runs batted in and 86 total bases this season. He has posted a .486 slugging percentage and a .435 on-base percentage, while registering 14 stolen bases in 16 attempts and provided stout defense up the middle.

One of two Black Knights to start all 46 contests to date, Moore has served as a sparkplug atop the Black Knights’ batting order, excelling out of the leadoff spot. The native of Greensboro, N.C. (Grimsley H.S.), tops the team in runs scored, base hits (59), triples, total bases, walks (27) and stolen bases, ranks second in batting average, third in home runs and RBI, and fourth in doubles.

He ranks among Patriot League leaders in 10 statistical categories, including batting average (8th), base hits (6th), runs scored (2nd), runs batted in (8th), total bases (5th), on-base percentage (5th), slugging percentage (11th), walks (2nd), stolen bases (2nd) and home runs (11th).

In addition to leading the team with 20 multiple-hit games (including five three-hit efforts), Moore lists second among team leaders with 10 multi-RBI performances. He stands just three multiple-hit games shy of the single season school record established by teammate Cole White last season.

Moore hit .342 during 20 Patriot League contests, finishing conference play with two doubles, two triples, two home runs, 19 runs scored and 13 runs batted in. He stands just three base hits shy of the single season Academy record for freshmen and needs one total base and 11 runs scored to equal the school’s freshman standards in those categories as well.

“We’re really proud of Clint and all that he’s accomplished to date,” stated Army head coach Joe Sottolano. “It’s nice to see him rewarded for his efforts. He has been one of our most consistent performers this spring, and we’re happy to have him for three more years.

“Like all of our players, Clint is an outstanding young man who works extremely hard on and off the field.”

Moore becomes the third Army player in five years to capture Patriot League Rookie of the Year honors, following in the footsteps of Milan Dinga in 2004 and Cole White in 2005.

Hooper homers help get split on Thursday…..

May 9th, 2008 by Andy in Professional

Handful of Homers Help Hoppers in Game 1 Win, 12-4

Lake County’s Five-Run First Drowns Greensboro in Nightcap

Greensboro, N.C. – Torre Langley hit a two-run home run in the second inning of Greensboro’s first game Thursday, then Danny Garcia, Adam Howard and Bryan Petersen skipped past the shortest man listed on the Hoppers’ roster whistling to the tune of “Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better.”

On any other night Langley’s blast would have undoubtedly been front page news, but the trio of Garcia, Howard and Petersen brought Greensboro’s home run total to seven on the night by each collecting two during the two-game split against Lake County.

The Hoppers took the first game, 12-4, in the completion of the May 2 suspended game in Eastlake, Ohio, before the Captain put up five first-inning runs en route to a 5-4 game two victory.

Greensboro (18-15) jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first game before Lake County (20-13) was able to plate its first run in the fourth inning. The Captains scored three more in the fifth but the Hoppers were too much and added two more runs in the ninth inning for a 12-4 win.

Stuart Alexander (4-1) picked up the game in the second inning for Greensboro and pitched seven solid innings in what was technically the first relief appearance of his career. The seven inning performance was the longest of the season for Alexander and snapped a personal two-game losing streak.

Alexander was aided by a five home run performance in the first game that was started by Langley and followed with Garcia’s second career multi-home run game, the second of which was his second career grand slam, and two more blasts by Adam Howard. For Howard, it was his first two home runs of the season and his third career multiple-home run game. Garcia’s first home runs was a two-run shot and combined, his two home runs accounted for all six of his single-game, career-high RBI total.

After ending the first game on a high note, the Hoppers and game two starter Brett Durand got off to a rough start as Lake County plated five runs in the top half of the first inning. Durand was lifted from the game after just one inning of work and gave way to A.J. Battisto and Don Czyz who combined to pitch six scoreless innings in relief.

Petersen collected both of his home runs in the second game and accounted for both of Greensboro’s runs before a late Hoppers rally brought two home in the sixth.

With the split the Hoppers remain two games behind Lake County in the Northern Division and will play game two of their four-game set with the Captains on Friday beginning at 7:00 p.m. Greensboro will send RHP Colby Miller (1-5, 6.25) to the mound for the first time since picking up his first win of the season in his last outing on May 4; Lake County is expected to counter with LHP Kelvin De La Cruz (1-2, 2.12).

Guilford Softball’s Hale Earns Academic Honor

May 8th, 2008 by Don in College, Photos

Greensboro, N.C. — Guilford College’s Kelly Hale (Toler, Ky./Belfry) earned Second Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III softball honors Thursday from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). CoSIDA members nominated and selected the academic all-district teams.

Kelly HaleKelly Hale

The all-district squads are comprised of softball student-athletes from Division II and III institutions in the five-state area from Virginia to Florida. Nominees were starters or important reserves of sophomore academic standing or above who maintained at least a 3.2 grade point average.

Hale enjoyed arguably the finest softball season in the program’s seven-year history. She earned Second Team All-Atlantic Region from the National Fastpitch Coaches’ Association earlier this week. The three-year starting first baseman hit .431 with nine homers and 43 RBIs, all school records, en route to First Team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) honors. She ranked second in the league in batting average and on-base percentage (.529) and third in homers and slugging percentage (.741) through games of April 28. The left-handed hitting Hale had 13 multiple-hit games this year and led the club with 12 contests with at least two RBIs. She ended the season on a 13-game hitting streak. One of her best games came in Guilford’s April 8 win at Mary Baldwin College where she went four-for-four with a double, home run and three RBIs.

Hale helped second-year head coach Dennis Shores’ club to the best season in school history. The Quakers went 20-21-1 (8-10 ODAC) and set school records for wins, runs, batting average and hits in a season. Guilford returned to the six-team ODAC Tournament for the second time in school history after a five-year absence. Shores could return as many as 14 letter winners from this season’s team in 2009, including Hale.

Three Guilford Lacrosse Students Land ODAC Laurels

May 8th, 2008 by Don in College

Greensboro, N.C. — Guilford College’s Gates Benson (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) and Tyler Harrison (Cockeysville, Md./Dulaney) earned Second Team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men’s lacrosse honors Thursday. The Quakers’ two All-ODAC selections are their most since 1996. Guilford senior Andrew Vigne (Concord, Mass./Middlesex) also received honorable mention all-conference recognition. The league’s seven head coaches voted on the all-star teams at the their annual meeting Tuesday in Charlottesville, Va.

A 6-3, 210-pound junior defender, Benson started 13 of 14 games and led the Quakers in both ground balls (44) and caused turnovers (10). He had five games with four or more ground balls. One of his best performances came against Roanoke College April 16 when he scored once and scooped up a season-high five ground balls. Benson also had an assist and five ground balls against the University of the South March 21. Through three seasons, he has 121 ground balls and caused 46 turnovers in 41 games (40 starts).

Harrison, a 6-0, 180-pound senior defender, started all 13 games as the Quakers’ top defender. He stood third on the team with 38 ground balls and led the defense with a career-high seven points on four goals and three assists. One of his best outings came in a win over Neumann College March 8 when he scored a goal and had a career-high eight ground balls. Harrison also had seven pickups in a win over Emerson College March 10. In his four seasons, he compiled 146 ground balls and 56 caused turnovers. He also scored 10 goals and had four assists. An Inside Lacrosse honorable mention preseason All-American in 2008, Harrison started all 53 career games and earned honorable mention All-ODAC in 2007.

Vigne, a 5-8, 190-pound goalie, started 13 of Guilford’s 14 games. Through games of May 4, he stands second in the ODAC in saves per game (13.14) and fourth in saves percentage (.546). Vigne had a season-high 24 stops against Roanoke College April 16 and posted a season-high .615 saves percentage with 20 saves against Washington & Jefferson University March 12. In his four seasons, he set the Guilford record for minutes played by a goalie (2656:49) and ranks second in school history with a 12.56 goals against average. Vigne’s 674 career saves ranks third all-time at Guilford.

Fourth-year head coach Andy Rowe’s Quakers finished with a 2-12 overall record, 0-6 in the ODAC. Rowe expects 21 letter winners, including Benson, back for the 2009 season.

HS Football practice in May???

May 8th, 2008 by Andy in High School

I have received at least two reports this week of high schools conducting football practice right now, here in the month of May. For one of the reported schools they are already in their second week of workouts.

One of the schools is out in the county and the other is over around High Point.

Is this legal and are the coaches allowed to be present while these type of practices/workouts are going on at the schools’ football practice fields? You would think the kids would have to have some type of coaching/supervision present or this would present itself as a very dangerous activity.

What is going on here? I know for a fact that some of our readers have the answers out there somewhere. Are these two schools, and or others, in danger of getting into trouble for conducting these type of springtime drills?

The top area/local returning HS football player for 2008 will be Will Newman(QB) at Page.

The Will Newman Watch is already on…..

NWG will play at 6, Hoppers have two with LCC…

May 8th, 2008 by Andy in High School, Professional

from John Hughes the Athletic Director at Northwest Guilford High School:

Tonight’s state baseball playoff game with Mt. Tabor will start at 6pm, not 7pm as originally scheduled.

The Greensboro Grasshoppers will have two games tonight with the Lake County Captains out of Ohio. Game one is a completion game from earlier at Lake County(Cleveland Indians) and game one is set to go 8 innings. Game two is set for 7 innings.

Do you think they’ll get both games in tonight or will the rains come in wash the crops away?

If anyone has a score from the NWG-Mount Tabor game, call us at 275-9738(Jimmy Fulmer will take your call and score) and we wil get that score on the air for you during the Hoppers’ games…..

One of our Northwest Guilford readers had an interesting comment about a recent game where a runner was headed home from third and needed to slide at the plate and there was a bat laying in the way from the previous hitter who was at first and headed toward second. With the bat at the plate it developed a dangerous play that would effect the runner’s slide. Moving that bat is the responsibility of the of the on-deck batter and not that of the umpire.

The on-deck hitter controls a lot of things that are going on around the plate on a play such as this. He needs to make sure the bat at the plate used by the previous hitter is out of harm’s way and he needs to let the approaching runner know whether to stand up or get down and slide at home. Excellent point by the NWG commenter and you are always hearing from the coaches etc., “Get that bat out of the way”.

Will Logan Self start for the NWG Vikings tonight? It has been a week since his last outing, 5/2/08 at Grimsley. Will John Neese be there to throw out the first ceremonial pitch for the playoffs?

*****Most of the other playoff action gets rolling on Friday night at 7pm and then looking ahead, Round Two will be on Tuesday May 13, Round Three on Friday May 16 and Round Four on Tuesday May 20.*****

Good to hear from Coach Oates at VCS…..

May 7th, 2008 by Andy in High School

Andy,
I’ve enjoyed your website and being able to keep up with the local high schools. Thanks for mentioning us a few times, and my kids all check greensborosports on a regular basis now. Just to let you know, Vandalia plays Wilson Christian Friday night in the state semifinals. And I think Gospel Light plays earlier that day against Wake Christian from Raleigh. Vandalia and Wake are the #1 seeds from the west and east. Anyway thought you might want to hear about it, thanks again.

Luke Oates
Vandalia Christian School Athletic Director

*****Good luck to the Vikings and Luke Oates has done a great job since Harley Miller left out of there several years ago.*****
